I do have some iMac 10.4.7 original install discs from 2006.
They are from a similar vintage mac, but not that one.

I have tried booting the Bad mac from these disks before, and it did not work.

Maybe I can install to a random sata drive, put it in the bad mac. boot it up
then update the firmware. upgrade to 10.6, upgrade the firmware again, then boot from the new drive.

Sound feasible?

You can run up to 10.5 on the G5.

No, hardly...
Have you heard of YDL (Yellow Dog Linux)? It's built for PowerPC Macs

Give their distro a try.
