I heard they are very unreliable according to consumer reports, that's all I can say, but I very much like the look of the new x5. If you do get an x5, you should get an x5m

get a 3.0 x5 same engine as a E46 and there only as reliable as the owner makes it.

If I had to get an SUV or something capable in bad weather and/or offroad, I'm looking no further than a Jeep.

My dad liked the handeling and drivability of my E46, but needed a SUV so he got an X5. If you get the 3.0 version like stated above then it will be almost like a bigger e46. The engine takes the same oil and filters so we buy filters in a 10 pack. I've gotten pretty good a DIYing my car and help my dad quite a bit on maintenance with the X5 since it's just almost like an E46. Haven't had a chance to try it in the snow though. He also has a Ford Expedition and it's been horrible in the snow. He's liked the X5 a whole lot more though because the the X5 is more drivable than the Ford since it's lighter and shorter. The X5's are Sport Activity Vehicles or SAV's as BMW calls them. Don't mistake them for an off road vehicle. The were ment to drive on roads, but get you out of trouble if you happen to get your self in it.
