Ok so an '88 325 vert is significantly faster than a '89 325i coupe?
No

I dont think so.
323i cant reach 100 km/h on second cear.
My 328i second gear tops out 104 km/h (and it does 60-100 km/h in 3,7 sec):

Btw my 328i does 0-100 km/h (0-62 mp/h) 7.0 sec.
I need wider 245 mm rear tires to beat that. Currently car has 225 mm rear tires and car has traction problems at hard launch.

My 330i step has the laziest first gear, it's incredibly frustrating. My 1989 535i absolutely destroys it through first and then keeps up through second and only slacks off on third.

I feel like my 328i is faster than 6.8 secs...and I'd read times listed as 6.5 for my car...so I chose to believe the faster times.

Besides, it's not a dragster. What kind of moron would drag race his or her bmw? As far as I know, in the entire NJ/NY area, there are only 5 such morons!

Where you going so fast, Del? Add up all the tenths of secs. you save in your life by getting to speed a little sooner, and on your deathbed, I bet it wouldn't amount to more than a couple of hours. Slow down and smell the roses...and vcg leak.

Really DMax? I feel like my 330i is slower than 7.0 seconds...

I don't agree, 0-60 is far too dependent on things like shift speed and traction. 0-100 or 1/4 mile is a better metric IMO

Even today's cheap "sporty coupes" (not even sports cars, sporty coupes) will run circles around an E46 M.. it's sad but cars are just getting ridiculously fast these days.

please give me few examples of these "cheap sporty coupes" that run circles around the M3 that you speak of.

Oh I agree cars are getting quicker, but the M3's performance is still very solid and one of the best deals out now on the used car market.

Depending on his definition of cheap, I suppose the Mustang 5.0, V6 Hyundai Genesis, G37 coupe, or even 335 could count.

I think the Mustang at least is in the realm of "sports car"

Has anybody else noticed that all of your non-BMW savvy friends tend to think we drive super cars around? I mean it's slightly awkward trying to explain that we do no, in fact, drive a ridiculously fast car. My buddy instantly asked to race me in is '04 STI with headers, exhaust, chipped etc... I mean come on... Do you know what the best part is though? My e46 turns wayyyyy more heads than his STI does

Looks is the LAST thing STI has to offer. Or any Subaru for that matter.
