p0340 after head gasket and vanos seals

I am having a problem with correcting a p0340 after rebuilding a 1999 328i m52tu. I repaired a bad head gasket.and also.rebuilt the vanos seals with Beisan seals.

The car starts and runs, but the check engine light is on with the p0340. Here is what I have done so far:

Replace the intake cps with a know good one, code still comes on after clearing

Bought a new cps (oem) and still sets p0340. Cps on other e46 works fine.

Changed out mass airflow sensor, no change.

Checked continuity for intake cps wires into DME and they were fine.

Set cam timing 3 times and still getting.p0340 when engine starts.

Head gasket was replaced because coolant was dissappearing quickly. No overheating, no smoke out the tailpipe. Previous owner may have overheated the engine. Head was skimmed only 0.006 and pressure tested. Used normal 0.7mm head gasket.

I am thinking it still could be the cam timing. Does anyone have a hint or trick that would help with cam timing. I am using the cam timing tools too. There must be some tweak or specfic step that might make a difference.

Anyone else solve a p0340 with something other than a new cps?

My suggestion for folks who get p0340 even after replacing their cps:

Re-set your timing.

I followed the timing instructions 3 times, but still got intake cam off by < 1mm. It was not until I worked the timing backwards and adjusted the timing chain by 1 link. This puts my starting point for the timing chain installation off of the mark to begin with.
