E36 gearbox in E46?
Is it possible to fit an E36 gearbox into and E46? I have been trying to find an answer but can't seem to get any info.
Mines the early E46 so its got the M43 which is similar to E36 M43? and gearbox model numbers are same but part number is different. I did speak to someone and he says "Even though they are both dual pan the plugs at the rear of the transmissions are not compatible" - I have sent him an email about modifying the plug but he hasn't got back to me yet. Can someone give me some information about this? or if someone on here has done it. Can the plug be modified from an E36? |

Yes for the M43 they are the same shitty Getrag unit for both the E36 and E46. Ask me how I know.
![]() Here's a pic of mine when it was pulled down because it lost 5th gear. It happened around 80,000 kilometers. ![]() If I cross reference my part number, this comes out. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=23007505600 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...16&hg=23&fg=05

MSportBMW is running the E36 M3 6spd box. You can also run the S54 tranny with some modifications.

Mines an automatic with the GM Dual Sump gearbox. All the replies i got is for regarding manual gearbox's aren't they?
Apparently whats different is the ?harness? that plugs to the gearbox? I just want to make sure that an auto box from an E36 will fit my car before purchasing one and not being able to fit it |

Yes it will fit. Just need to replace the selector switch.
But I am not sure, if the gear ratio will be different or not, that may impact performance. What did you do ? |

For future reference, gearbox = manual
Transmission = automatic

Yeah that's fine, but if I'm going to post a specific question and not specify what I'm talking about, I can at least subconsciously hint. If the op said I want to change my transmission, then my bet would be so many manual comments won't have been thrown out.

I ended up selling the car and got something different as most people were saying that the gearbox (or according to this term i didn't know about, TRANSMISSION for automatics) will fit each other but the electronics are not the same and will cause problems so i decided not to try it and a friend of mine who had an idea on how to fix it bought it off me.
