Mini Review: DealExtreme License Plate LED

I have installed a set of LED license plate light from DealExtreme for about 10 days now. Very happy with them. If anybody needs white LED lights, check them out.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.27811

Price: They are $6.66 each, which comes to $13.32 shipped.
Shipping: Shipping is free and I receive the lights in two weeks.
Build Quality: Very good for the price. There isn't any heat sink, but there is a 160ohm resistor for each of the LED to protect them from voltage spike.
Fitment: The length is exactly the same as the festoon light in our cars. The size of the PC board is just right. They will fill up the width of the lamp, but not a tight fit.
Bulb-Out Warning: Nope. I haven't seen any bulb-out warning after installation. It has been ten days and they are fine.
Light Quality: Very bright. They are bright enough to illuminate the ground. The light pattern is very even because of the size of the board.
Color Temperature: I'd say it's more about 5000K. They are very white. Much whiter than my other cheaper LED festoon I have purchased from the same company.

Here is a photo of the bulb installed, with the lens cover removed. Lots of space, not tight at all. The lens cover fits back in with no problem.

Here is the actual brightest of the bulb. It might seems dimmer than other "photos" you see around here, because this is NOT a long exposure. This photo is very close to what I see from my eyes. The colour is also very close to what i see.

This pic is taken with manual exposure, and manual white balance to match what I see.

For photographers: It was taken as a RAW photo. I used Lightroom to "pick" the white balance where the license plate is, the resulting colour temperature is exactly 5000k. This implies the light produced by this light is also 5000k.

Does it fill in the middle of the license plate evenly? Problem I have with LEDs are they shine the light straight down and not so much sideways.

From the looks of the design you will have a concentrated beam of light coming from the middle. Too much light dispersion in the wrong spots

I ordered these too. Good find!
I ordered the 12w ones as well, cause I was curious. I'm probably going to use those as trunk illumination lights though

Thanks for the review lerico. I am going to make a purchase and give them a try also!

My led light knowledge is limited, but have you tried any other deal extreme lights for like sidemarkers, reverse, or corners or anything? I have a feeling corners may not work as these may require resistors of some sort

I have their LEDs for my other cars, but I would not get any other DX LEDs for my E46 unless i can clearly see them with built-in resistors. The LED mentioned in this post is a rare high built-quality product from DX.

So I got these in and I had a bit of trouble getting them to fit. Luckily I had ordered the other set, which were a little dimmer, and a little bit smaller. Those fit well, and pointed straight down.

Note though, that I have a vert, so the light compartment might be a bit different.

Got these lights last week and put them in! They work awesome!

Installation was kinda of tricky though. I had to pull off those end notches on the old bulbs and jam them onto the new LED ends. This then allows for the new LEDs to snap into the notches that are in the liscene plate bulb holder. Hopefully this holds up and they don't fall apart. Otherwise not too bad at all!
