New Fanatic from WA saying hi!

Fellow Fanatics,

Just thought I would introduce myself and say g'day. I am up to my 4th E46 M3 and my 7th E46 in total over the past 12 years. What can I say, I just love them!

Any fanatics from Perth, feel free to say hi

Cheers, Nicco

Yeah only just joining now after so many years of BMW ownership. To be honest guys I was scouring the internet on how I could import a CSL from the UK to Australia and came across a thread on an M3 forum. One of the members there suggested I check out E46 fanatics. I had no idea there was a forum for our beloved E46, lol.

In response to the questions posed why I have been through so many E46's???? I fell in love with the coupe shape and it went from there. Initially I could only afford a 325, then moved up to a 330 coupe, then a 330 conv. Once I started to make good coin I bought my 1st M3 and just kept going. One of the M3's was knicked and written off, one was written off whilst it was parked. The last one I traded last year for a E9X coupe and after having it for 6 months and not liking it went back to an E46 and my current ride.

Welcome and nice ride! In regards to importing a CSL into Australia - I just spent two months overseas and tried everything to make that happen. In short - there is no way to import a CSL but through the personal import scheme, which requires you to be in the UK for minimum 12 months. The car has to be registered to you, made available for use to you and garaged at your address. Also you have to provide your passport travel log to ensure that you stayed in the UK for 12 months unless it was a short trip outside the country or work related. If for some reason you don't reach 12 months (you reach 10 months) then along with submitting a personal import scheme request you need to also fill out a discretionary import approval request as you did not meet the 12 month criteria. In short only way to own a CSL in Australia is to pay asking price when one pops up for sale.

Of course if you have a friend living in the UK and they plan on moving to Australia/return home to Australia in the future they can purchase one in their name, import to Aus and sell it to you. Also you are entrusting someone with a large amount of money and it's never guaranteed.

I've spent hours and hours in discussion with a barrister, an import broker and the department of transport and infrastructure over the past few weeks and things are not lost on the import front. The discretionary approval process by the minister is the avenue I am taking and I am working with a barrister to test the legality of the legislation on vehicles not on the register but have been sold in Australia by a manufacturer. The import broker I am working with put me in touch with a client who went down the same track on a Porsche 997 Turbo S and was successful and I am using his legal representitive.

It's not about the dollars, it's principle of it. In fact the 2 CSL's I am interested in that are in the UK will roughly the same price as the CSL for sale here in Aus at the moment. The difference is that both UK cars have less than 8 thousand miles on them and that's what makes them so appealing.

Interesting. Initially when I started all of this I thought you could import under the discretionary approval scheme alone. However, it is not the case - you have to submit the discretionary approval under a specified import scheme. Have you selected a scheme? The guy at the department of infrastructure and transport was very helpful and said you can challenge the SEVS register and try to get the CSL on it. You are probably aware that under the SEVS import you can not import any "3-series" BMW, doesn't matter if it's a special model like the CSL. He said the technicality is that the CSL chassis is considered a "3-series" and that the series is available in large quantity from the manufacturer for sale in Australia. He said if BMW say that the CSL isn't a 3-series then you can import the car however he said the department would like a big please explain from BMW. After contacting BMW Australia they advised me that the CSL is classed as a "3-series" vehicle - so that's where that ended.

Yeh, I'm aware of that one CSL sub 8000 miles on cslreg. Good luck, I hope you have success.
