Unhappy Please Help!

I'm new to this. But I have a '01 330cic with 201,000 miles. Back in July it started to stutter when I pressed on the gas. Then I pulled the car over and it was idling rough barely staying on. Shop picked it up and but they found other things to replace, vanos tubes, power steering pulley, and belts, and oil housing gasket. They said that later it needed ignition coils and a valve cover gasket but since they said bill was high enough that it can be done in the future. Well first of Oct. did it again, so I replaced the valve cover gasket and spark plugs myself but after researching should i do a compression test before i spend money on new coils? The shop never did a compression test or a leak down test. I was thinking of doing a compression test but am afraid of what the results may be that kind of miles. This is my first BMW and love it and don't know that much about them.

vanos tubes? i didnt know the vanos had any tubes that connect to it...i had my vanos replaced for a little under $2,000.00 and if i recall it just hooks up to the front end of your motor, the vanos just constantly changes your valve timing if im not mistaken.

Sounds like they are trying to run up a bill. Take it somewhere else for a sanity check. Vanos, fuel pump, vcg, coils are DIY, or at least cheaper than $2K if you don't DIY.

Check engine light? Trouble codes?

See the first 2 links below in my signature for some ideas.

The symptoms ur describing have nothing to do with leaking valve cover gasket or steering wheel pulley. You don't need to do a compression test, for what? Is it burning oil? Is white or blue smoke coming out the tail pipe?
Bad vanos adjusters or bad solenoid cause the car to idle rough or no start at all.

Check fault codes and check fuel pressure. This is where u should start first. Fuel pressure with ignition on should be about 5bar
