Should i pay this bill ?

Ill make it quick.
We have owned our house for a little over a year. We got a bill to our address under the previous owners name. The county of LA is charging for a Fire brush clearance inspection for $24, now there is a late fee because it was not payed, the bill is now $ 65. We don't open letters addressed to the previous owner. So... will i get away with not paying just because it has the previous owners name ?. What do you guys think.

Thank you.

Well, think like the gov't for a minute.

Can you tell from the bill if the inspection was done before you owned the house or after?

If it was after, I'd suggest paying the original fee and including a letter stating that their billing error (wrong name) caused you not to receive the first invoice, so please waive the late fee.

If it was done before you owned the house, it's your call, but I'd be inclined not to pay it. If they DO ever try to give you a hard time about it, they've got two problems to overcome (timing and wrong name).

Why don't you call and ask before you incur additional fees?

Thanks alot guys, i guess the right thing would be to call and act like i dont know what the letter is. I dont want to pay it but at the same time i dont have the time to deal with future headaches. The letter was after we owned the house, its a stupid charge that never took place.

^ yes

1) You don't owe anyone else's bills, BUT...
2) You don't want to get caught avoiding any fire protection-related costs.
