The S54 Sound

I finally bought the car i always over and it is three times better than what i expected it to be!

but of course...i pictured the S54 being such a ferocious engine to sound like a Jet engine or something serious it just sounds like any ol engine to tell you the truth......not even loud at idle.........

but my god it moves!

If you want it to sound even better, get an exhaust. I've got an AA exhaust on mine and it sounds demonic!!!

You have redlined it, right? Idk, after getting used to the S54, the ZHP just sounds a lot more tame than what I remember (my neighbor has one and lets me drive it on occasion).

That said, I have Euro headers, which gave it a somewhat more organic sound, especially at lower RPMs.

E46 M3s lack in the sound department. 9 out of 10 that I hear sound like rice... Only when heavily modified do they really sound good. Lancer Evos have the same problem, awesome car that sounds like crap.

Please do not just put a muffler on it, but to each their own.

I absolutely love the way the 100% stock E46 M3 sounds. It screams quality and precision. It screams Genuine BMW Motorsports. I wouldn't change a thing (unless someone offered me a CSL intake manifold/airbox thing)

Indeed. Unfortunately, it would also change the contents of my wallet rather significantly

Interesting, I find the S54 engine with the individual throttle bodies to make a very nice roar. But that is from the front I admit. Stock rear muffler is known to be rather "tin" sounding. If you want it to sound aggressive there is a huge market of mufflers/exhaust systems out. With all different styles of sound.
I had the Rogue El Diablo which was a deep tone. I switched to Supersprint street-sport as I wanted it quieter and less drone.
So what I'm saying is don't take someone's "word" on each exhaust. Only you'll know what you like/want.

Yep +1. I love that rasp. Sounds very precise and intelligent without trying too hard to sound aggressive.

Weld some AR20s in section one. That'll kill all rasp. Any exhaust you put on will sound good if you have AR20s. Even the eBay ones.
