Help! How do I retrofit...

Hey guys, I just purchased from The Retrofit Source the pieces I need (to my knowledge) in order to perform a stock halogen to bixenon retrofit. The parts I purchased are:

~Bixenon FX-R 3.0 2.5" Lens Projectors
~E-46R Extended Shrouds
~Matsushita Gen V Ballasts
~Morimoto Standalone Can Bus
~D2S Osram Xenarc 66240 CBI Bixenon Bulbs

I did some research as to how the retrofit is performed and I felt pretty confident in doing it myself but the second I started dismantling my headlight I realized that it was more complicated than I thought. I know that I have to cut the bowls/reflectors but I'm not sure about how to do that. I couldn't figure out how to remove the bowls for as they aren't removable by screws.

I really need some assistance doing this. I looked up on TRS's website for professional retrofitters and I'm not dropping $500 on someone to install them.

Here is a picture of what I bought:

Re: Help! How do I retrofit...

It takes allot of cutting and trial and error. It helps to have another set of bowls to butcher, just in case.

The bowls are held in place at three points, two of the points are the adjusting points located on the top corners and the third point is located in the center bottom which is just a plastic retainer. check out solid Jakes video on you tube on how to disassemble the headlights so you can see how to do it.

Re: Help! How do I retrofit...

To remove the bowls you back out the adjusting screws all the way on both sides and then the center bottom plastic retainer has to be popped out, and it takes a good amount of force to remove.

Re: Help! How do I retrofit...

I have a set of bowls from 2001 330I, they are hid bowls so not allot of cutting is required. If you're interested let me know.

I'll look at the back of the headlight assembly again. It looks like you have to remove the rubber seal and some things in that area but I could have sworn that there was nothing there to remove...

I will let you know on the bowls though.

I have halogen headlights, so both the backings of the low and high beams look like the yellow plastic with the rubber seals instead of having the highbeam alone:

Did I buy everything I need in order to perform this retrofit, by the way?

Not sure what you mean about both the backing looking like yellow plastic with rubber seals, the retro I did was on a halogen set of bowls so that's not a big deal.

As far as the stuff you bought well the extended e46 shrouds will require some trimming as they are to big, and you will need some epoxy as well to secure everything in place and a dremel to cut everything with, other than that your all set.

Am I going to have to completely remove the halogen harness or disconnect it at a certain point?

Here is a picture of what I was referring to. The yellow color of the back of the reflectors.

I'm not sure what to do about the gaps on the left and right of the shroud. Is cutting really going to take care of them?

EDIT: Okay, so I figured out how to caulk the shrouds to the bowls. They are currently drying and I got the wiring set up. The xenons do work! The only thing is I have to figure out how to get them to respond when I put the high beams are as they are bixenons.

Re: Help! How do I retrofit...

ok so now that your all set you use the splitter on the high beam wiring to split the connector into Two. One goes to your high beam light and the other to the solenoid on the projector, the projector should of came with the rubber seals and the plastic connector to complete the connection to the splitter.

Re: Help! How do I retrofit...

One more thing, the shroud should attach/clip onto the projector not siliconed to the reflector bowl.

Yeah I just snapped in the shrouds overtop the projectors. The projectors have now been caulked into the housing and are currently drying. I'll post a picture when I have everything installed and ready to work on the bixenon capability.

When you adjust the headlight levels, you do so by turning the two knobs on the top and the rear of the housing, right?

So you only used Caulked to set the projector? If so you need to follow up with epoxy so the projector doesn't flop around and move while driving.

Yes you adjust the projectors with the knobs, however you shouldn't need to adjust them very much, you should of used the old cutoff line as reference so that when you mount the projector you should of aligned them to that reference point.
