Fan running after engine off 2000 323ci

Hey guys

Fan won't shut off after I turn the engine off... Unplugged it to save the battery. Any clue what could cause. Hopefully it's and DIY project.

Thanks a lot

Your fan controller is bad. Controller comes with the fan. $140-160 online. $400 dealer.

If you drive a manual, its a 2 min job. If you have an automatic, much more complicated taking front bumper off. It all depends on how much of a DIYer you are.

+1, mine does too every now and then, usually either on hot days or after high performance driving. I thought it was supposed to do this?

fan is held by 2 torx screws and 2 plastic 'nail-like' tabs. Pull the fan up carefully and re install back on the new fan. 10 minutes max.

If you keep on having the same problem after installing the fan, you should check the temp sensor on the rad hose.

My fan stayed on after car's off once in last summer. Never happened again.
I figured it was a good thing, unless it never stops

My manual trans 2000 323ci had the same thing happen. Fan controller was visibly exploded.

2 minute job to swap it out with a replacement.

Fan would be running for few minutes after shutting the car off on hot days. But when the fan control module goes bad, it will just run hours untill the battery goes out.
Since BMW don't sell the module seperately, you need to replace whole fan with module.

Just because a fan remains on DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS A PROBLEM. The engine cooling fan, if electric, can run for several minutes after Engine Off. This is normal.

If the fan runs for 5 or 10 minutes, then I'd suggest that it is okay. If it runs until the battery is dead, then that can be a problem.

But, you did not say WHICH fan is running, so for anybody to tell you to go out and buy anything is perhaps poor advice.

Hey guys I replaced the sensor 1st becuz that was an easy fix. And to my surprise the fan is working properly. I let the car run idle for and 20 mins and fan can on for about 6 mins turn off... The temp gauge normal.. I did purchase the fan module so just for fun I'm going to replace it. I'm new to this DIY protects it will give me something to do

Do you have a manual or automatic?

Share with us where you purchased your fan for $110.

My 325i is doing exactly the same ive just unplugged it from the top, i was reading into and from what i can gather there is high/low speed relay which controls the speed, my fan is constantly running at the high speed, so does this mean the high speed relay is stuck and if the case where is this relay?, cant find it, unless it is built into the fan and if this is the case would a simple change the fan rectify the fault?

It is built into the electric fan, you should see a box on the engine-side of the fan.

You most likely need to replace the entire thing, it is a 5 minute job to change it.
