If the paper is useless compared to your work experience, why are you wasting time to finish the class then?

I'm not an engineer by title or degree. I just wish the engineers I correct could actually engineer anything worth a damn so I wouldn't have to fix their busted ass designs. Here's three classes they need to force every engineering student to take:
Engineering applications with regard to real world codes and other industry requirements.
How to engineer something that can actually be used and maintained.
Understanding your designs prior to submitting them for construction.

I did it all backwards. Become an Engineer early, get promoted up to Sr engineer, go to engineering school. It all boils down to experience and when you are a speaker at conferences and designing the largest network of its kind in the US before you are 22 you have enough references and published work they don't care about a degree. Most engineering job descriptions list required education "or equiv. experience". A guys worth on paper = nothing. A guys real world experience = gold. There are all too many "paper certified" guys out there that arent worth a sh!t.

Only D I received in life was in Fluids. Funny how that subject became a good chunk of my career and I loved it.

And to those who say papers don't matter, eyes open wider if they hear BS or MS and no one can ever take those titles away from you.

yeah (given it's a reputable school), you'll always know you studied and competed with the best and made it. it's berkeley, nobody gives out all a's and b's.

No one can take the "title" away from you. That may be true. However, I'll let you know that without either I have more influence in my industry at 35 than most who have any such title. I'm sorry to let you know, but industries care more about results than "titles" in the long run.

Great thread guys, the upper level course work seems to be the fun stuff that's all applied. The lower division and core work seems to suck the most for everyone lol

Luckily we all take then same lower level math, but I don't have to take dynamics(just statics) or any of the thermo stuff (we do emag and circuit design/logic)
First of all, I call shenanigans. There's no way a company would give you the opportunity to do such an elaborate project just on a whim let alone lead it or do it by yourself. This is especially true without a degree or education to back it. And where did you get the education/knowledge/experience to write papers to get published and learning stuff to speak at conferences? If some 22 year old kid came to me with a desire to single handedly design a new product, I'd laugh at him. But this is the internets so anything is fair game.

Also, there are a hell of a lot more real world experience guys out there that aren't worth a **** than the ones with papers to back their abilities.

I'm a chemical/petroleum engineer. I bring oil out of the ground. It's ok.

Are you in a computer based industry? I don't see that happening in my industry, oil and gas processing.

Are you in upstream/mining? I'm on the cooking side of the business.

I'm realizing it doesn't matter how much money you make, it's a real downer not being able to say you studied engineering in college, even if it is just a title.

Yeah we know what your price is, Mr. Google!

I go from working on my gimbal to watching the aerospace engineer in the science thread and suddenly what i'm doing doesn't seem terribly impressive .
