Surface Reception which will take place on October 25th. Between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM ![]() ![]() --------------------- Im looking foward to deploying this thing for my work as the thinkpad tablet doesnt really cut even with 3g as I need legacy programs to work out of the box like wordperfect and not rely on remote access. so far its this and the newly announced thinkpad tablet 2.

That looks great but that is a tablet. This is the original micosoft surface.

Aside from the Xbox, Microsoft's hardware division has had limited success. Previous tablets are notable flops.
I'm curious to see if this level of software compatibility is enough to make a different story. |

Lenovo also released a couple of models priced between $599 and $1099 or so. Looks really nice. If you think that you get all the benefits of a tablet with the full functionality of a PC (streaming content, nearly countless programs options...) it's a really good deal. Goodbye laptops?

I was bummed when I found out the magnesium was just a thin coating to give a faux feel of metal.

Aesthetically appealing... wounder how well it functions. I haven't touched Windows 8 yet.

I'm definitely considering something like this as a replacement for my old dell laptop. These and the other models from Asus, Samsung, Lenovo etc are looking very nice. A tablet running on an x86 architecture that can function as a full blown windows PC is very appealing to me. iPads and Android tablets never really interested me very much personally. This is basically a new product category though: a laptop - tablet hybrid. I hope it includes the classic desktop view as well for use with a mouse.

There are alot of critics who say this will not replace the laptop as legacy programs are not going to be easy to use with a touch screen. Ofcourse mouse or atleast in my case a wireless mouse would definately be considered as there are latops with both touch screen and mouse support. But I think it will be nice to have very portable machine that can and will do anything that needs to be done for working professionals who already have desktops and laptops. For my work, I will be able to recieve email, with attachments in wordperfect which will be easy to glance through using touch via the live tiles(was called metro but I forgot what they renamed it to) so that simplicity of a tablet is there. But if I needed to edit the wordperfect document, I can still fire up wordperfect on the tablet which is not possible with any other tablets(only readers available at a ridiculous price) this will apply for any workflow prorams like adobe acrobat, timeslip, time matters, live notes, concordance, legal solutions, etc etc. I think it may be faster than your 3 years old laptop due to the SSD, but I do see space as a limiting factor.(sort of solved with 32g/64g sd card and external usb) I am for sure going ahead with ordering this or the new thinkpad tablet 2 as I already have purchased a few thinkpad tablets(awful mini usb charging/connectionsoldering port and problemic power button welds but quick turn around with RMA and charging solved with 40$ dock) I have learned that even though the android/IOS platform tablets are very cool with 3g/4g, for real work we need an x86 platform period. There are already windows 7 tablets that have been out for awhile, I just think this is going to be the right time to step up to one.

I'm going to wait a little while longer and see how these turn out before making any moves. I'm still tossing around the idea of a conventional ultrabook as well. It's split 50/50 now though, I need something to come along and sway me to one or the other.

I have both a tablet and clam shell pc.Laptop works great tethered through the 3g thinkpad tablet(gobi wan card 100$ + plastic tools to crack open thinkpad tablet) or my phone.
When I use the small pc, I wish it was touch screen and even more portable without the keyboard so I can browse work/lifestyle on the couch or on a bean bag. with the tablet, i wish I can use real programs instead of remote controlling the main pc via logmein to do real tasks which is very very doable but requires jumping through big hoops and meails and google drive andsend and recieve..takes steps.. so basically if I get the new surface, it would be mashing these two devices, like these two pictured on the bottom having sexand making a baby. which will free me of my tablet and clamshell and I can just stick with one. ![]() I can just attach the thinkpad to the back seat and use it as a multimedia on the go internt pc and use the laptop ...probably never. the ultrabook that my co worker picked up is very nice, light, clean, SSD, fast, the keyboard and mouse pad/track still there, not really a bad thing.. Maybe Im just too used to touch screen stuff. Cause when I hold a laptop now these days , I think to my self. Man there are devices with touch screen and same capabilities as this laptop but with the bottom keyboard part ripped out.

I was given an iPad as a gift and it can't do as much as my iPhone can. And I've played with other tablets and they all fall short in some way. I've been wanting a fully functional (read: laptop equivalent) tablet since they hit the market, not a watered down OS and limited hardware functionality. Honestly every tablet I've used has been nothing more than an expensive web browser. I'd like to be able to run photoshop, code, and connect peripherals if I'm investing upwards of $500 on a tablet.

![]() --------------------------------------- I think we're going to have to wait and see if its video processor/ram (cpu these days come packed with videoprocessing as well)will be able to take on the hardcore suites. But for mainstream and casual lifestyle programs, Im quite certain it will work very well.
