Moving to VA-DC area, need some input

Hey guys, I know you guys probably get these posts a lot about what it's like and stuff. But I just accepted a job and they are relocating me there on the 22nd. I'm sort of short on time preparing for everything. Just wondering if the weather is really bad over there. I'm from CA, so it's hot as hell over here. I'm guessing I'm going to need to buy some big coats lol Is housing/rent there as expensive as everyone says it is? I'm not even sure what questions I should be asking. Thanks for any inputs you guys have.

Yes it is expensive unless you live in the boonies and commute. Their are some hardcore long commutes around here and alot of bad drivers. You will need a coat it gets pretty cold.

How long was your current commute in California? Where is your new job located?

Boonies to people living in DC generally means anything outside of the city's limits. The price of housing can easily double from inside the beltway to another 20-30 minutes out. There are several major highways going in to DC and they can all reach a stand still at peak traffic hours. Depending on your comfort level, further out may be better -- you just need to know where to look. Shoot me a PM if you want.

Welcome to the area. IDK where you work, or where you want to live, so you will have to elaborate a bit.

is it cold right now? well here is the address for where I will be working for a few months: 8201 Greensboro Drive, McLean, VA 22102. I'm honestly not even sure if that is the DC area. That's what I was told. Currently I will be staying in Vienna, VA as part of the relocation package.

I'm only looking to rent a room rather than a house/apartment. Just trying to keep my costs down so I can save up for a house back in CA.

from the sound of traffic/bad drivers. sounds exactly like what i go through now from the drive from OC to LA lol i don't mind long drives if that's what you're asking.

that's pretty much all the details i have as far as place of employment goes. and they said after a month, i might be moved to a different part of VA too. so it's kind of like not that concrete yet.

yea i googled that already. i saw the tyson's corner area on the map. so it's like a huge business center from what wikipedia says. are there any areas where I could just rent out a room for like a couple months? some place that's cheap lol at least until they are sure i'll be working in that area permanently or not.

You will be in a lot of traffic especially around x-mas the big accounting 4 is there and the best mall in Northern VA. Its pretty pricey to live in that area but nice and quiet.

Tyson's is really congested.

In the McLean, Falls Church, Tyson's area expect like 800-1200 for a decent place. I currently live in Reston and share a 2 bedroom condo that's 1600. Then Reston area is 15-40 minutes from McLean depending on the time you commute to McLean. I also work in McLean and find the commute to be fine. Usually about 20 minutes around 6:30 am. After 7 it jumps to ~30-40 minutes.

Personally I'd recommend Reston or Northern Arlington to live. Tyson's sucks, McLean is really quiet, Arlington has good night life but can be congested, Reston has good night life and is a planned community so the congestion is minimal. Fairfax, Vienna and Oakton get bad congestion as well.

I live in MD. When I commuted to DC traffic got bad. It was much worse during the evening going home though. Without traffic I've gotten from my place to the Pennsylvania Ave in less than 30 minutes. The most I've spent in traffic one evening was upwards of 4 hours. With a manual car it was terrible.

Weather is nice right now but it will get cold in the coming months.

Tysons corner is a really nice area to live, but pretty pricey. If i'm not mistaken Mclean is one of the top 3 richest counties in VA ? I could be wrong but it's up there... Expect lots of traffic though. If you're younger and looking for night life i agree with Ciaran on living in Arlington, great night life there, which is good not having to go into D.C. all of the time, but area in Arlington like Ballston, Rosslyn, and such are really pricey. I had an apartment there and it was $2500 a month for a one bedroom.

Edit: and as far as the weather, I wouldn't say it's bad. I think we experience all of the seasons fully. It does get really cold and snow in the winter, but it does get crazy hot in the summer too.

Yea it can be pretty pricey. I mean you can find cheaper of course. Where my apartment was was very central. Close to the metro, I was litterally less than a 5 minute walk from the Iro Jima memorial, but you can find good one bedrooms in arlington as low as probably 1K or $1,200

if you get cold, just go to Marshalls or Macys buy a coat. I've been using a simple fleece jacket before I found something warmer.

you can try living in other parts of vienna, also try annandale, herndon/reston (they are off the toll roll which can get you to work quicker)
