04 m3 knocking noise.

I'm hearing a slight knocking noise when the revs are coming down. It only happens when the clutch pedal is not pushed down and the car is in neutral. When the clutch is pressed the engine is crisp with no noise. Also hearing the same noise when I turn off the engine and the clutch isn't pressed, no noise when pressed. Any ideas on what this could be? Clutch? Pressure plate? fly wheel?
Thanks

I know the knocking noise your talking about. My car has had that since new. I asked a few master mechanics who I'm acquainted with over the years and they say not to worry about it. It is not an impending failure or something sinister along those lines. I'm at 110K miles with the original clutch and everything is still kosher. I'm going to guess that it has something to do with our flywheel and the reason I say this is that I have a bud (who also went through the BMW mechanic's step program) with a Dinan M3 and its got a lightened aluminum flywheel and it really rattles, especially with the AC on.

I have a friend with a Hyundai that does the same thing. Sounds like it's about to blow up, but I guess some cars just do it.
