So I get that dude jumping out of balloon is cool, but is it cool for something other than its own sake? Is this just Red Bull putting another feather in their cap, or is there real actionable stuff coming out of this?

They are working with private companies and NASA designing the next generation of space suits and onboard life support systems for suits and small vehicles like the capsule he went up in.

Red Bull and Virgin (Sir Richard Branson) are in fierce competition to commercialize space travel.

Other than novelty, where on earth (pardon the pun) are they going to go?

Imagine getting from NY to Sydney in 3hrs. Completely possible through low earth orbit transport. Thats the future that they are working on.

Regular commercial flying was for the uber rich at a point in time as well. Got to start somewhere.

Concorde was a flawed design from day 1, and wasn't too much of a departure from standard commercial flight. This is another realm.

Concorde was an engineering marvel and an amazing design. It was ungodly expensive, but it operated profitably (because tickets were several thousand dollars each).

How was the Concorde a flawed design? Because it couldn't handle sucking up big chunks of rubber? If so, then I gots bad news for you.
