Question Alternator Whine issues with complete custom Sound system!

Hey all glad to be a part of the E46 Fanatics Forum!

I recently installed a full infinity sound system in my Bmw 323i e46. I have seen many posts relating to factors of alternator whine!! i have not yet got rid of the alternator whine in my car speakers.. Has anyone actually solved this problem? i have brought new Rca's tested ground on both head unit and amps , run the Rca cables down the centre of the car and practically everything else that is findable on the internet! if someone has solved this it would be greatly appreciated if you can share how you solved it as i have hit a wall and cant live with the horrible noise!

I have the Sony Xplod CDX-F7710, powering two amps and Boston Acoustics for everything. I don't think the whine can be helped unless you rip out the entire carpet. I guess shielded cable might help too, but I think I already have that.

Yeah it seems that running them on the chassis is not the way to go the closer you get the louder the noise becomes! i spent $130 on fully shielded RCA cables it did make a difference but not the difference i had hoped for! i thought it may have been the head unit but i guess not now. Thanks

I ran all of my cables through braided stainless steel sleeves, and grounded them on both ends. I don't have any noise at all. I actually did it that way because I was worried about it causing issues with the various communications systems in the car.

The noise is being induced into the power wire going from the alternator to the battery. Under the hood this wire runs together with the ignition coils wire harness, inside a platic rail in the fire wall, remove the power wire from the rail and place it as far down as possible, this should take care of the noise.
Had the same problem did this and no more whining

Fjlemus! I will definetely try this tomorrow morning! If it works i will be so happy! Thanks for making me aware of this.. it's more of an ignition whine cause it is there when i have the ignition on hence why then noise is going to the battery. Thanks heaps.

Or you can try to ground the HU and amplifiers to the GND.
If that doesnt work then adding a noisecanceler to the amplifier works (this is what i've done)

Tried both of those neither work. Geez you have put alot of effort into your car, how did you go installing the turbo? Was it easy? I plan on doing that one day haha

Alternator whine = ground loop.

How did you test your ground, did you bolt directly to the chassis?

Ground loop, bad connection, alternator has a shorted diode.

Use jumper cables to make a temp jumper from engine block to body ground and see if noise is reduced.

you need a filter for the power wire to the head unit. they are not expensive and are easy to install.

try a filter as Max said. I had the same issue as you so I traced my wires, found a ground that wasn't fastened securely, re-fastened it and no more whine.

Good info! I've had this same issue in the past and actually gave up for a while and just ran my speakers through the stock amplifier. Did the same stuff, tried different grounds, ran wires down center of car, and nothing seemed to help. Let me know how this turns out for you and everything you did!

Keep in mind you may need a common ground point for you amps and head unit as well. Also make sure you high power amps are fed from the battery and not a point close to the front of the car.

Keep in mind the battery is the best noise filter in the car.

Lestat, i bolted straight to the chassis with the paint sanded back to give me a clean connection, ground cables are 2 gauge and are about 60cm long.
I tested the ground with a multimeter by touching the battery negative and my ground position to get a reading of 0.001 which is quite a good ground I'm pretty sure!
