Hellrot Touring - OEM+ Build Thread

I've owned this car for almost a year now. Bout time I created a build thread. She is a 2001 Touring. 5spd, base model. As basic as an E46 could come. No sun-roof, no multi function steering wheel, gloss black dash/door trim, no HK sound system, etc. I purchased that car from another member early last fall. He had done extensive work while in his ownership, both modifying and maintaining. Brief run down of major modifications upon my possession:

* ST Racing coilovers w/Vorshlag camber plates
* Turner rear shock reinforcement
* Dinan tune
* Intake
* B&B axle back exhaust
* M Tech II front bumper w/fog lights
* Khoalty Hamann carbon front lip
* Heated sport seats
* Various exterior lighting changes

Pictures from previous owner.

A deal was struck, removing some bits and pieces to brign the price to where I was comfortable paying. Upon arriving at her new home in Montana:

I had a local independent BMW shop take a look at the car. A clean bill of health was discovered. Cooling system was in great shape, VANOS seals looked new, all suspension bits where in fantastic working order. I was a happy camper!

I immediately changed the transmission and rear end fluid, swapped in a new fuel filter, new cabin filter, and blower motor resistor.

I wasn't sure on the styling of the front lip. It also is not a lip that is condusive to driving at the ride height I wanted to be at. With that in mind, I removed it. I wasn't sure if I would like the M Tech II front bumper "naked", but it has most certainly grown on me.

I had planed some other changes first, but a set of M Parallel replicas came up for sale at a price I could not ignore. 18x9.5 et25 squared.

Though I have no pictures of this modification, I took a chance on iSimple's iPod integration kit. Model IS72. I couldn't be happier. It is a bare bones kit (does not display song information on the head unit, head unit can not control the iPod), but the sound is superb, and the price was very reasonable.

Next up was taking care of the blacked out tail lights. Luckily they were just covered with a Laminex film. Careful application of heat from my heat gun, and I was back to OEM tails.

I've never been a fan of the red/amber outers, and red/clear inner tail lights. Khoalty had their red/clear outer tails back in stock. Very simple install with huge gains asthetically.

Last but not least. I plan on driving this car on a few road trips a year. Driving out to Montana from Wisconsin reinforced how annoying not having cruise control is. A friend happened to have a Sport wheel from a 330 that he had no use for. A deal was struck, a retrofit wiring kit was purchased, and the wheel was installed.

After tinkering with the ride height and camber, here is how the car presently sits.

The future is mostly going to bring more modifcations that bring her closer to the OEM+ vision I have for her. Items include:

* 545i shifter w/ZHP shift knob
* Swapping black gloss interior trim for something with more contrast
* Retrofit OEM headlights
* Powder coating (or painting) OEM exterior window trim to black
* Headers
* Proper maintenance as issues arise

I really couldn't be happier with this car. Tourings are rare enough as it is, but the combination of Hellrot exterior paint, black leather, and 5spd really help it stand out. The condition of the interior, body, and running gear bely the 150K miles the car has done since rolling off the assembly line. Best of all, most of the modifications only add to the over all joy of driving her.

Awesome upgrade on the wheels. This makes me want an e46 avant even more.

Great job! I personally would change out the color matched grills to an all matte black set and go back to OEM roundels.

Thanks for the compliments!

Matte black grill inserts, as well as OEM emblems are on my list of future modifications.

Re: Hellrot Touring - OEM+ Build Thread

Congrats - sounds like the PO took great care of it, but I'm a much bigger fan of your version and your plans! Definitely wasn't digging the other wheels and tails.

Looks great and you're massively lucky with the barebones specs!

I am pretty happy about the fitment as well! PM'd about the shifter.

I thought I would miss having a sunroof. I don't! Interior stays cooler, lot less wind noise. I don't have the roof rack mounted, but when I do, no sunroof will help keep the wind noise considerably less than if I did have one.

I think I want to keep my roof rack delete parts. That way, I can go back and forth as I please. Thanks though!

Thanks! I'm not the first E46 on M-Pars, but I wanted to try to have one of the best executions of them.
