Hindsight & cars

After the thread on "would E46 M3's become collectible" I thought of some of the cars people have had over the years & sold, then years later they become sought after.

What cars have you had over the years or almost bought, that are now sought after.

All these were in the 80's.

Cortina MkII GT. Good condition. Sold it for $1000.00

LJ Torana S 2 door, I fitted GTR dash, GTR guards, did all the black paint work a GTR had, GTR trim & seats, rebuilt 186 added GTR spec cam & fitted triple SU's. Sold for $2200.00

HR Premier, this was traded in where I worked & was immaculate, the salesman asked me if I was interested in a cheap car, got it for $500.00, drove it for 6 months, sold it for $500.00.

Was offered by the same salesman XC Fairmont GXL with all the options & 351. He only wanted $1500.00 for it & it was immaculate.

E38 RT Charger. $2500.00, old man said it would cost me too much to insurance, so I didn't get it.

Mini SS, there was only about 500 of these made, lead up to the LS, again the salesman just wanted to get rid of it, paid $1500.00, sold it for $800.00 a couple of years later, great condition.

Early 90's
VC Valiant Regal. This was a courtesy car at the regional Mitsubishi dealer I worked for after my apprenticeship. It was in great condition, bought it for $600.00, used it for bit over a year, sold it for $500.00.

The only car I wish I bought was my old mans VL wagon. He traded it for 2k and I couldn't afford it and when I did have cash and saw it for sale 10 years later it had had some YGO style molestation that put me off completely. Hindsight I should have just bought it because I wont have the opportunity again as it was stolen and never recovered.

My uncle sold a Candy Red 68 Corvette Stingray that he brought back with him from the states and rebuilt it from ground up to the point where it was immaculate. Got married and the wife said it had to go, sold it for $35,000 - I was devastated.

Then he brought over a 68 Mustang Fastback in Red and rebuilt it, got it complied and drove it for a few months until he realised it wasn't what he wanted - so he sold that about a month ago for $60,000. If I had the money I would have got that in a minute

Turned down $14K trade in for my VL Executive on a $19K VL Group A in the mid 90's..... Yeah that was a great move.

Completely original and immaculate 10A RX-3 sedan....white with brown interior. Could've had it for $10k when i finished school. Went overseas instead then when I got back, bloke had changed his mind and didn't want to sell it anymore.

Also a couple months after I bought my E36 M3, an immaculate E36 M3R came up for sale at a BMW dealer. I think they wanted 60k for it, but damn it would've been a keeper.

Hmmm.. I remember looking for my first cars, was seriously considering RX3s and 240Z, back then around 10K would get you into a decent one. The prices they go for nowadays (10 years later) is astronomical and shows no sign of abating.

God, dont even go there, growing up, I wasn't even 10 years old at the time, my best friend and I loved cars, we use to ride our bikes down to Marrickville where Victoria Yeeros still is today and look at all the muscle cars go by, back then, Marrickville was where it was all happening, tons of great cars every day, XY's SLR's Valiants Monaros, etc etc etc.
I grew up on a little street which when followed down one end, was the Princes Highway, there use to be 3 car lots, 1 on our corner 2 across the road.
Would have been back in 84 or 83, we were riding our bikes and what was for sale.. a 1978 Ford Falcon Cobra, it had QLD plates and it wasnt even 9k, sure back then and that was a few k cheaper than going price because of the QLD rego, suppose still that was abit of money but compared to what it is worth now..
Anyway, I raced back home and told my dad, (he was actually in the market for a car) we went down to look at it and my dad was keen, he loved it also, we test drove it and he put a deposit on it and made a appointment the following day at the bank to get a loan to get the rest of the cash.
Loan gets approved and dad heads off with mum to go see and collect the car, my mum put her foot down and TOTALLY disagreed, not a family car, not practicle, to much power, etc etc etc. I was livid, me and my mate cried lol, I didnt forgive my dad for a week, id always argue with him about the car.
Dad ended up buying a Ford Cortina instead, cant remember the model, the newer ones at the time with the sqaure lights, it was a taxi color yellow with a brown vinyl roof, I still remember the number plates, NIX436.
To this day, I still mention it to him, he's still kicking himself hard.

My Ride: slow and steady
Not necessarily a desirable car, but one that I remember fondly.... In the mid 90s my dad sold his 1981 LTD with a delicious 351 V8 and twin carbs. Fully optioned out, the thing was a dream to drive. The low end torque was massive and easily accessible. I drove it to school once and was dared to drop a set upon exit that day... we had a dirt patch for a student car park and being a brazen 17 yo I couldn't say no. So, upon departure I did as dared, stopped and looked back. Not good enough - went back and did it again! That got me kicked out of the student car park and banned from driving to school.

In 2000 sold my British Racing Green RX2 which I used as my daily driver. The last thing remaining to be done on it was to clean up the dash and stick in a decent stereo. It had everything else already done - racing seats, retrimmed doors, pillars, roof, 16" BBS RX2 wheels etc and of course a 3" droopy tip. I had the engine rebuilt with a mild port and better internals. Most importantly it was engineered and complied with a Series 5 13B turbo. I didn't realise the value of what I was riding in at the time. The thing was a death machine though. ~800kg, 13B turbo running about 9psi, locked diff and no weight on the backend... funnily enough I was never ever pulled over by the cops in that car although a lot of them would stare and watch as I drove past

I dropped a lot of cash into the love hate relationship I had with that car. I couldn't understand at the time why the buyer was so keen on the deal.

Followed that with an AW 1985 E30 323i which had a JPS kit and interior. It was a little neglected. Rebuilt the motor (ported, polished, flowed, remapped ECU done by Peak), fixed a few other little things and then decided I needed to travel again

Been looking online lately at E30s and there are some beautifully rebuilt / custom ones out there.... with a price tag to go with it.

Some cars that my dad sold without thinking about keeping them:
MkII Jag (completely restored)
MG B
67 Mustang in red with a white soft top
Fiat 124 Sport
1980s 635i (it broke down on him the day he bought it, in front of a MB dealer on William street in the city. He walked in and traded it for an E class on the spot!)

You know reading through this there seems to be a bit of a pattern, lots of ex-Rotary owners . Even myself had a '1981 RX7.

You have to try every engine type at least once!

- rumbling V8
- turbo 4
- rotary
- silky smooth inline 6

HDT VL Turbo Calais '88 Auto, sold with a cracked head and bypassed turbo for $2,000, taken away on a flatbed. Used to fund an '85 E30 318i 5SP.

The VL is still a shitheap, but if it had been kept another 5-7 years probably someone would have paid dramatically more to be let down by it than $2k.
