Expensive "cluck"sound in engine

My 2002 330i with 146k Km.(90k miles) has suddenly developed a very expensive sounding random loud cluck noise which only happens on cold starts and only lasts for about a minute or so. It sounds as if the timingchain is trying to climb the sprocket teeth. It even causes the engine to shake as if misfiring. Any advice wil be welcomed.

Just a follow-up for future reference. I replaced a dead coil just before this problem started, and apparently the "computer" now
needs to be reset as it is firing one coil at the wrong time, resulting in a loud clunck sound in the inlet manifold and ofcourse shaking the engine violently in the process. This happens only when the engine is cold.
