In other words- "high performance motor", but I see it is based off online research. I was having trouble figuring that out, just wanted to make sure.

To answer your question, no. You would be more interested in an S52 or S54.

Lol guys, I know the s54 comes from the e46 m3. I was only asking if the m54 is considered a high performance engine.

High performance? That's all relative to what you're comparing it to. It's a really good engine, but one made with smoothness and fuel economy in mind as well as performance.

The "high performance" BMW motors would be the S52, S54, etc... Basically anything found in an M. Those are the only engines made with flat out performance in mind.

"High Output" is just a name used by most a lot of US manufacturers to distinguish between engines of the same displacement, but one makes more horsepower.

Choxor nailed it. I had a '96 Jeep Cherokee XJ with the 4.0 H.O. (High Output) inline 6, which produced 190 HP as opposed to the 177 HP of the non H.O. 4.0 inline 6s.

"High Output" is just a marketing term, usually used when they offer a similar unit with less HP. It makes no difference, since BMW does not use such naming. It is worthless to worry about.

I wouldn't call the S52 more of a "high performance" engine over the M54. It's a beefed up M52. In fact, my M54 has a higher specific output than the S52.
