The newer the better for me. I love the latest technology, luxury, and safety features. My ideal BMW is fully loaded with every tech option available.

IMO I can't stand how the e36 looks, it's very dated. And stotic is a nice way of euphemizing that the interior is crap
Lol I feel the same way about the interior. For some reason the E30's don't look as cheap inside as the E36's do. I think the E36 overall has a poorly designed interior and the exterior is less sophisticated looking than the E46.

I've driven a few E36 models. Only one was manual. I mean for an older car to today's standards it isn't terrible. Aesthetically I see one around town that I would love to own, but otherwise they just strike me as old.

I would get one for a fun car for the right price, but nothing I would take the girl out to dinner with. Not that my E46 325 is anything impressive.

My Ride: 2003 325XI
I have owned 2 E36 M3's one bone stock and the other with some fun bolt ons and suspension goodies. As well as a E36 328IS. I now drive a 2003 325XI. I will say that for sporty driving the E36 is one of the best cars period. But they do falter when it comes to interior design you cant help but feel that they are built for lack of a better word cheaply. For a D.D. the E46 wins hands down, they are much more refined and feel like they are of a more solid build quality. Also the general public is much more likely to respond to the E46 over the E46, maybe it is because everyone who has a office job seem have one. Either way they are both cars each with there own pros. and cons. I know one thing you cant go wrong with either they are both very good cars.
