Rattling noise from engine
I have a rattling noise coming from my engine bay. Im hoping there isn't something wrong
with my engine and its something minor. Anyone know what the noise is from? Thanks. Last edited by Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo; 09-25-2012 at 03:28 PM. |

The DISA valve can make a clattering noise (when mine went bad, it sounded like a valve problem).
The procedure to check takes 5 minutes and requires no tools: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=748124 |

my disa valve is running fine. The rattle comes more from the front. It doesnt get louder when I drive the car but it doesnt go away. Sounds more like something is wobbling around loose. its not a uniform rattle

Idky my video keeps turning into a picture but the rattle seems to be coming from the front of the engine like one of the tensioners or the pumps. More towards the left side.

Water pump pulley is a little wobbly does this mean the water pump bearings are diekng and the pump needs to be replaced or can I replace just the bearing

You'll have to replace the entire water pump. I picked up a Saleri (OEM) water pump from AutohausAz for $55 and the BMW coolant for another $20. Total with tax came out to right under $80. It's a good time to replace the thermostat as well, but I'm going to wait on that. $$$ is a little tight.

I had a rattle from the front and it was also my water pump. Old one was plastic and the new one is metal so it a repair and upgrade as well. give it a try, doesn't hurt since you car is most likely due for a pump anyway.

I bought OEM with composite impeller. Not the best but OEM bearings supposedly last longer than aftermarket and since my bearings are the issue I thought id get the pump with strongest bearings.
