Steering rack replacement suggestions.

I had an impact with a small curb to the front driver's side wheel of my e46 m3 at approximately 30mph. Bent the front control arm. shop suggests i replace steering rack do to possible internal damage and cost of part is around 1600. I see remanufactured ones elsewhere such as rack doctor for a few hundred but my guy says they are junk. anyone have any suggestions or experience with these.
Driver's door airbag also deployed so anyone with suggestions as to avoid purchasing the new door panel unit with airbag from dealer for 1500 would be appreciated.
thanks

Steering rack replacement suggestions.

Replaced it with a rackdoctor one. Worth every penny.

^ OP has an M3. although some switch in that "yellow tag" rack i would suggest either the M3 one from Rack Doctor or a CSL/ZCP rack. those others on the M3 can be a tad twitchy from some reviews.

How loud was the airbag when it went off?

airbags are about as loud as a 9mm pistol

I constantly hear suggestions for rackdoctor around here. Your guy doesn't know anything about them in all likelihood. Of course he wants to sell you that $1500 "Genuine BMW" rack.

You could possibly source an airbag from the same year and body style (sedan/coupe) in a scrapyard.

What WDE is saying is that the mechanic will source a used rack such as from the rack doctor for $300 or something (at the most) and sell it as genuine. i'm pretty sure he knows rack doctor sells reman oe racks

oh there are a lot of M3 owners who have done it. i'm just saying since he's not looking to upgrade the feel but to fix his existing issue. posting of the .712 rack isn't the first thing to come to mind in an answer, and might be confusing.
btw there are many posters on dedicated M3 forums who think that 13.7:1 ratio is bit twitchy for a daily street driver. but yes, even some track junkies go the Z4MC at 12.8:1

yes OP i would get a standard rebuilt unit from Rack Doctor before getting a brand new unit from BMW (if it was out of pocket).

Yeah I'm aware they are remans. What I was trying to get at was either of two possibilities (one of which Mango covered).

1. Mechanic wants to mark up the $1500 brand new rack (the honest thing)
2. Dishonest mechanic charges you for a brand new OEM rack and really buys a $200 Rackdoctor reman rack. You won't be able to tell the difference.

alright so i was planning on going with the bmw rack but i will look into rack doctor. has anyone had any issues with them or anything noticeable compared to stock. I'm knowledgable about buying elsewhere than dealer but this car hasn't had any corners cut on it so far and the 1300 in price difference seems like just that to me (correct me if I'm mistaken). the shop does track porsche's so I'm sure they're assuming money isn't an issue and the bmw is the obvious choice for top reliability.

You should just buy the one from rackdoctor they have warranty anyways. I installed it on my 330ci and worked great no issues

You're not cutting corners. It's a genuine BMW rack with new seals. It'll work just like new. If it doesn't, they'll probably give you another one. The cool thing is that you could even install the rack yourself. It's pretty simple. Make sure you get an alignment after you get the new rack

The owner of Rack Doctor comes on these forums and answers questions, and has even explained some aspects of what he does when he rebuilds his racks. Not many other business owners will do things like that. From all reports, he sells quality stuff. You would be wasting money buying a $1600 rack, when the remanufactured one will probably outlast your car. Even if the reman one does not last (it will), you could buy 3 more replacements, and still come out ahead.
It is still an OEM rack. BMW does not actually make any racks, outside vendors do. The racks at Rack Doctor came off of a BMW, and had the seals replaced. If there are major components damaged, he does not use them. They are still OEM parts.
Some of the pickiest people on this forum are saying they are OK. That alone should answer the question.
