Is GM5 coding _really_ necessary?

So my GM5 blew up. I am planning on getting hold of a used module from ebay/scrapyard. Will it work when I plug it in?
I understand new modules need initialisation, but would a used module work off the bat (apart from remote locking)?

I am also getting mixed messages about the importance of the part numbers. Is it crucial to get an exact match or are there several of p#'s that will work with a given year/bodystyle?

Some functions will work without any coding. Interior lights and door locks will work since they work the same on all cars and all modules. But, there are a lot of other functions that depend in the car body style, options and MY. For example wipers may not work right because you don't have rain sensing wipers, but, the used module came from a car that did or vice versa Also not all modules are created equal. Things changed a lot over the years and new features were added, other features moved where they were controlled. Most notable rear view mirrors. Some modules will not be able to control the rear view mirrors regardless of coding because the electronics is just not there in the module. If you get the same P/N you know that electronically they have the same capability, but, because of coding it may not work right. I have seen the same P/N used across all body styles, sedan, coupe, vert and wagon so windows will work differently.

It is always best to repair your original module so you don't have to deal with finding a compatible module and then getting it coded. I realize that in your case the GM5 literally fried and may be beyond repair.

Post your car model, build date, and the software/hardware versions of your module. Then we may help you.

No, not every module will work.

GM V 12V
BMW 61 356 914 362
109 110 150112
HW1.1 SW2.0 AI01

The car is a 2001/04 320ci

As I understand this is the 'High' variety, as it has the extra relays for the rear windows. My priority would be getting the wipers back as now the Olympics are over the government has turned the rain back on.

I know of no GM5 module compatibility cross reference list except for what the dealer will tell you the new virgin uncoded replacement module PN will be, but, it sounds like ac_2007 has something.

Get the same hardware version (hope wherever you're buying from has that information, or allows you to check). If you've done any coding before with NCS Expert, you will be able to change software versions up. Not sure if downgrading is possible though.

So I just need to make sure I get a 'HIGH' HW1.1? The rest can be corrected in software?
