Too much arguing over a budget receiver here. Most are going to be very comparable in that price range. I have a budget denon and think it sounds like crap. I don't expect a budget "any other brand" to sound any better. Some might have more features than others, but they all have the same necessary features. Other features are just a bonus that sound cool but will most likely never get used. You might spend more time setting them up than ever using them.

Now nice Floor speakers for under $100, impossible. Is that under $100 each or the pair? Either way, impossible. You might be able to find some half decent polks for about $100 each, but I'm not a big fan of the 5" woofers which seem to come standard on the very inexpensive stuff. If working with that type of speaker budget, I'd almost always choose bookshelf speakers.

As for the sub, I still have the same one I got back when I bought my first sony 5.1 setup. I'm sure it's not the best in the world but I can't imagine my neighbors would take kindly to me getting one with all that much more pop

For gaming, I still rock my AX Pro headphones... the 5.1 in them is awesome. I wouldn't consider playing COD online without them
I ran these for a while before buying more expensive fronts: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290206 I got them for $109.99 each on sale from Newegg. Just sign up for Newegg's email list and you will see them go on sale in the next month. I have seen these smaller ones for $79.99 each: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290204

As mentioned above, these Polks are a bit lacking in the low-mid and low frequency range, but they are likely the best in that price range.

http://www.vanns.com/ for speakers. I got my floorstanding speakers 50% a couple years ago. For something on the lower end but still good, check out Energy V6.2 or Infinity P363. I bought an older version of the Energys and I love them.

A good subwoofer is key to a great sound experience. It doesn't need to be loud, just needs to be balanced and clear.
Correct on both counts, especially the sub. People often equate good subs with loud subs, but that doesn't have to be the case. A great sub should be able to provide, tight, controlled, and nuanced lows regardless of volume. Poor subs have to be cranked loud to be noticed.

For floor standing speakers, you can actually get pretty lucky on Craigslist from time to time. Do a little research on slightly older speakers and you might discover something good in your price range (assuming that was each, no way you are getting anything with decent sound for $100/pair even used). Kef, Klipsch, B&W, and Paradigm are some of my favorites.

The speakers I am using now are some Energy Speakers I got at goodwill for $10 about a decade ago. They are a bit harsh at loud volumes, but work great in my room at low volume.

+1 on the craigslist comment.

I have Polk floorstanding speakers in my kitchen, they're pretty good for the price and look nice. You will definitely need a good subwoofer to go along with them though.

I guess my Sony bookshelf style speakers probably should go but I think i'll wait to upgrade until I move into my new house. For the time being, I think a 3.1 (no rear speakers) setup will have to do... seems silly to spend the time/energy on 5.1 on an apartment living room (rear speakers would end up essentially right next to my couch).

We'll have to see how this all pans out.
again, sony anything for audio is crap

get some boston acoustic bookshelves

Arrived today. The pioneer 822 (step below this) went on sale on groupon today for 185 plus shipping.

Wonder if this 1022, at 279 shipped, was a better or worse deal

Like I said, they are the same except for the 822 being 5.1 and the 1022 being 7.1.

When I purchased my Kuro, I also got a Pioneer Elite 7.1 receiver and a set of Klipsch speakers and sub. The only thing that let the system down was the speakers. I would have spent the dough on an Elite, but that is me.

As for speakers? Get what you can get, but craigslist is king for this. Sometimes you will find deals, and I mean DEALS. Other times you will not.

These speakers apparently review well for what they are. $120 for the pair on Newegg right now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...m-_-82-117-403

28 days after receiving it, my Pioneer vsx-1022 has already shorted. The HDMI board apparently is bad as it no longer sees the HDMI signals being sent to it. According to AVSForums

Quote:
You need to reset, and that instruction can be found in the manual. If your issue is similar to mine and many others, your HDMI board is the problem. With mine, the resets only temporarily solved the problem until it happened again and again. From what I was told, the HDMI board cannot adequately handle what is being fed into it. You can take your receiver to a Pioneer authorized dealer. If it is under warranty, be prepared to wait for the part to be available. I went through this same issue for 3 months before Pioneer just replaced my 1121 with a new 1222. If your receiver isn't under warranty, the HDMI replacement part costs around $315 and that is without the labor costs.
Spoke with NewEgg who told me "well we can help you this time as it's in the 30 day window, but in the future, if you're buying a product with high failure rates, you should buy from Best Buy as they have a better warranty program"....

Pioneer has just lost my business going forward.

Boo.. that's too bad to hear.

My Pioneer Elite is still going strong after all these years. Guess the quality has started going down.

Really bummed about it. I asked the people at NewEgg what would happen if this occurs again and they said "if it's outside the initial 30 day window, you have to go through the manufacturer's warranty which can take weeks to process"....

My Pioneer receiver (not an Elite) has been going strong for 3 years now. Maybe you just got a bum unit?

wow, my vsx-1014 has been cranking for damn near 10 years, i don't use the hdmi however, maybe i'm an old dog but , i like the optical audio separate from the component vid

edit: lol, i was like wait, hdmi 10 years ago? sure enough don't have it, like i said, i prefer the audio separate from vid anyhow

i wouldn't knock a receiver for the hdmi alone,jmo
