Wrapping OEM Sport Steering Wheel in Alcantara
Hi All,
I was wanting to wrap my OEM Sport Steering Wheel (Non-M with round air bag) in Alcantara. Wondering if anyone has tried doing this? I know Coby1 has done it for his M3 Steering wheel - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...ight=alcantara Just FYI - I love the sport steering wheel. My hands just slip off of it while driving. I obviously don't want to buy a cheap a$$ steering grip (or cover or whatever it is called) and spoil the looks. I searched in the DIY section with the keyword "alcantara" and didn't find what I was looking for. Hence, the thread Cheers!

I just helped code a guys car and he had his alacantara wheel redone by his buddy who's an upholstery specialist . It looked nice. It was done the real pay.) ppp No visuals could identify that it was redone. However, it sounds damn expensive. I've seen wheel skins, but that look good for its price but none of them cover the left and right side of the steering wheel whete the outer diameter connects with the Center of the wheel. What a shame. Oh, here's an example of what I'm talking about. http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?n...d=261093793758 the guy is supposed to have me do more on his car so I'll take a picture and get a quote

Click on the item. There's a link that takes you to an installation youtube video. The issue isn't really the sewing part, something that you need to be fairly good at to provide a visually evenly sewn design, the problem is finding the skin that covers that part of steering wheel i was talking about.

Oh I see. He cut his own fabric. Hm... If glue was used in the process, it might not be so bad the sewing then could be more for cosmetics than serving a function. Like he said, practice with a a material with similar properties. Velvet? Suede?

Also, if you look closely at his wheel, as good as he may be, that same area that I keep mentioning shows imperfections. I was wondering how he went about solving that issue. In the end, you will have that problem too. Yoy can never quite cover up that part of the steering wheel.

And yes of course you can do it to a sport steering wheel. The principles are the same. The only difference is you have to sew all the way around the steering wheel right at the bottom where it splits into 2. That's a very tight spot. That or your can just skip it and wrap around it and pretend it's not there or its one piece like the most wheel.

Oh and 1 last thing, sorry for blowing up your thread. A diy for this would also be quite pointless. There's really no way for someone to really write instructions or shoot a video that would help you on how to measure, how to sew, glue, stretch and make it look good. It would be quite an enormous task.
