Does this sound like VANOS? Other ideas?

Hi All, I'm a long time lurker.

My 2003 325i m54 has been giving me some trouble - intermittently. The car seems to run better when it's cold and for the first 15 minutes of the day. Then all of the sudden something changes. I could be sitting at a light after driving for approximately 15 minutes and then all of the sudden i get the following symptoms:
  • Decreased power and responsiveness (feels anemic and not sporty)
  • Howling sound when I"m on the gas
  • Poor fuel economy overall

The RPM's are stable during idle. I did the plastic bag test on the oil fill cap and it was fine.

I initially thought VANOS but then I heard VANOS issues are usually not intermittent like this.

Thoughts???

Have you checked the intake boot for splits/tears?

OKAY! I just went out and checked this boot and the rubber is soft - I didn't notice any cracks. BUT THEN, I noticed the clamp holding the boot on was fully loose. The boot was only pressure fitted. I have now tightened the clamp. Surely air was getting in there. I will report back after some driving.

450 Km/280 miles per tank city driving. Seems low. Am I wrong?

If by a tank you mean 14 us gallons then your mpg works out to be 20. Thats ok for city driving. If u push it it'll probably be lower.
