Anyone else order the AR Drone 2.0?

I pre-ordered mine 3/1 and it's supposed to come on Tuesday via UPS. I haven't been this excited over anything in a while, I feel like a nerd. I was just curious if any other fanatics were awaiting theirs as well.

For anyone that doesn't know what it is:

I got the 1.0 for Christmas and 2.0 was announced the next week it's still a lot of fun though because they provide the SDK and the software is fairly straightforward.

I was about ready to buy the 1.0 when the 2.0 was announced, but I decided just to wait it out. I hope the upgrades will make it worth the wait.

Do you use yours a lot, or did you get bored of it?

My Ride: is silver and slow.
Looks pretty cool. So it streams live video capture back to the control device? What's the flight range on it and what do you use to control it?

12 min battery? 165 feet distance?

What if it runs out of power or goes too far.

300 bucks down the drain

I'd rather build one with much better specs, but it is tempting

Wonder what it would take to upgrade this one compared to building one from scratch? FAA regulations won't allow a drone to go outside of your line of sight, so I'm sure that has something to to with the limitations of this.

I think it makes too much noise to actually sneak up on someone, but I like the way you think, haha.

That is correct, it streams live video to your device, and you can also record or take photos at the same time. The range is limited to WiFi, the drone is a hotspot. You can use an iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Battery time sucks. I'm going to have to purchase a few.

I guess the trick to not losing it is keeping it within sight.

If you don't have an iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, or tablet, there is the ability to convert it to RC. They call it the MacGuyver mod, lol. You obviously lose the video control though.

Does it alert you when you are approaching its Max distance? My parents have a place on central park right above the tree line and it would be sick as hell to fly it around central park haha

I'm not sure, the only warning I have read about is the low battery warning. I'm sure you could still fly it around the park, as long as you stay reasonably close to it. When I get it, I'll fly it close to the ground and see if I can find the max distance in a safe area.

If I saw that in my face (outside public areas), I'd hit it with spray paint.

Reminds me of the r/c car on the beach giving flowers to random girls.

Not a lot, but it's just starting to get warm outside and I'll be using it more over the summer. I'll use it more once I get it flying via my router/laptop. I can control it via the computer and a PS3 controller but haven't worked out connecting to it via a WAP.

JJ, check out http://www.ardrone-flyers.com/forum/ and https://projects.ardrone.org/ if you're at all interested in buying one. There are plenty of physical mods and like I said before, Parrot provides an SDK for tinkering. Everything is written in C. I never learned C but I'm picking it up just playing around with this thing; it's fairly straightforward. There's a hack on the forums that allows you to control the drone via your WAP that extends the range to 600-900ft. Couple that with a live video feed to your computer and controlling it with a PS3 or Wii remote and you're set.

No, it doesn't. And the couple times mine has lost connectivity, the last input got stuck and it took off on its own before slamming into a tree at full speed. Luckily the chassis is CF and the rotors are some sort of super-plastic because I've yet to do any damage and I have had some pretty serious crashes.

Got my Drone 2.0 today and it is awesome. It was really windy out, so I didn't take it up too high or far, just spent some time learning to control it and doing flips. Anyone thinking of getting one, do it. Totally worth the price ($299), just get extra batteries.

That's awesome. But I gotta say, if a drone randomly got in my face when I was walking down the street, the owner would get a first person video of it getting stuffed in a garbage can.
