Ditching the cable... Going all streaming.

So I got to thinking... Why the hell am I tied to a monthly bill for 1000 channels, 990 of which are useless crap...

So, I am ditching the Dish. I have Directv, and I am not honestly upset about the service, but $139 a month and climbing for 10-15 channels is retarded.

I already have Netflix on the PS3 and an Apple TV (who knew) and am looking into Hulu Plus, and a Roku with the addition of an antenna. I can get all the local HD channels, uncompressed plus a few others that seem pretty good.

For all the stuff not covered by those few options, I think torrents (Top Gear UK) and the few that are full season passes through iTunes will cover the rest...

Anyone else get away from the service providers and move to a more streaming solution?

I ditched my ATT Uverse (satellite before that) for the same reason. I only watched a few channels, most of which were regular network TV. I just bought a digital antenna and haven't looked back. I don't have a DVR, but I hookup my laptop to stream whatever is available online.

I miss a few shows here and there, but ultimately I don't want to watch a bunch of TV anyway.

The one thing I miss that I don't get is local sports teams since they are on Fox Sports.

BAM ..I was just thinking the same thing! All I need is internet. My TV catches all the local channels in HD. I just need ESPN trying to figure out a workaround.
Watching Sportscenter on my phone is not cutting it.

I bought a Roku about a month ago with the hope to be able to ditch the cable tv. I signed up for Hulu Plus as well. I don't watch much cable tv so this effort was mostly to ween my girlfriend off it, but it has been unsuccessful thus far. Something about being able to just turn on live tv and not have to select something to watch. I'll post up once I pull the plug on the cable and let you know how it is going.

I am just sick of paying $150 a month for cable when I probably watch an hour of cable programming a week.

I wish we had a decent internet provider. I mean... look at this shit...

With Charter Communications, we can get 30 Mb/s plus premium cable TV for $89 a month for two years (and it actually works!). Coosa Cable is a fucking joke. We pay about the same price for internet that works 25% of the time and TV that comes in half-fuzzy.

NHL, NFL and MLB are all available for PS3...

Your argument is flawed.

The more I look at what stuff I can get with a season pass on iTunes, and Hulu, the more it makes much more sense.

If you watch 3 shows really, the season passes if bought on iTunes are less than one month of Directv at my current rate... Unreal.

Streams in HD? I'm impressed. I don't know much about gaming console. Last one I owned was an XBOX back in 2003.

Yea, you can order the NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL Center Ice and MLB package, for the same if not lower price than you get with DirecTv. Comcast has the same type of setup, it was bound to happen.

I got the PS3 for a BluRay player, and happened to get BF3 and a few other titles that I play. It is really a full home media center.

I can stream ANY source from my mac (Music, videos, pictures) surf the web, go to youtube, CD, DVD, BluRay, Netflix, Hulu, Music channels, etc.

It really does a lot if you get into it. I know people that buy it just for the media part. With the additional $25 remote, you have the equivalent of a media center.

I know Xbox 360 does most of this too, but no BluRay is a deal breaker.

Add to the PS3 capabilities an Apple TV (For itunes music, movies, videos, etc) and the ability to stream anything from my library and it gets much easier to enjoy content on the TV. The Roku looks very promising as well, though I am uncertain if I need it when I have the monthly subscription services through the Apple TV and PS3.

I'll probably add an Apple TV or two for all the rooms in the house to allow Netflix and Hulu (Jailbroken of course). It seems pretty promising. I have been looking for a change.

Directv is slow, the menus are annoying, and to be honest, I really only watch a few shows, most of which I can download. I think I am pissing away $140 a month for what I think I need.

Right now, I am making a list of everything I watch, and I'll have the wife do the same, and if everything is OTA, or streaming capable... I think I might have found my reason to get rid of the bill... If you really look at the costs, it makes sense...

Netflix Streaming: $7.99 a month
Hulu Plus: $7.99 a month
Playstation Plus: $50 a year
Antenna: $100-$200 one time purchase
Apple TV (Gen 2): $100 times 2
Roku: $100 for the top of the line model

I will be in to this for $500, but my monthly fees are only $16. I can get three season passes from iTunes at $32.99 each and still be under the $140 tag. Hell, I could order 2 full seasons of shows each month and save.

Unreal what we don't realize until you do the math.

One of my friends was telling me that the MLB streaming takes your geo location into consideration and blacks out home games for local teams.

Edit:

Quote:
Regular Season Local Live Blackout: All live games on MLB.TV and available through MLB.com At Bat are subject to local blackouts. Such live games will be blacked out in each applicable Club's home television territory, regardless of whether that Club is playing at home or away. If a game is blacked out in an area, it is not available for live game viewing. If you are an MLB.TV Premium subscriber and not within either Club's home television territory, the applicable game will be available as an archived game as soon as possible after the conclusion of the game. If you are an MLB.TV Premium subscriber within either Club's home television territory or an MLB.TV subscriber in any territory, the applicable game will be available as an archived game approximately 90 minutes after the conclusion of the game. Archived games are not available through MLB.com At Bat.

In addition, note:

These blackout restrictions apply regardless of whether a Club is home or away and regardless of whether or not a game is televised in a Club's home television territory.
All live Toronto Blue Jays games are blacked out throughout the entire country of Canada.
Additional teams may also be subject to blackout in parts of Canada based on their region.
All live games will be blacked out in the U.S. territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands during the MLB regular season.

To find out which Club's live games are blacked out in your current location, click here:

To find out which Club's live games are blacked out of the area where you will be watching the game, enter the zip code of that area here and click Go:

Note MLB.com live game blackouts are determined in part by IP address. MLB.com At Bat live game blackouts are determined using one or more reference points, such as GPS and software within your mobile device. The Zip Code search is offered for general reference only.
NHL Center Ice is the same
Quote:
If you are in the local television market for a team or teams, whether they are playing home or away, you will be blacked out of their games in NHL Center Ice.
You could proxy to get the blacked out games I guess.

I think anyone in that situation would let it go as well... But some of us are married, with kids, and have to pay the bills like a big boy.

Yep, they do it for every sport. Usually if your local team's game is televised nationally, the games are blacked out, so it forces you to have cable/satellite to watch the game.

Wait is this even on PS3 that they're blacked out?

Also, anyone looking at Internet TV boxes should really look at the only one that never gets talked about. Western Digital makes a box that consistently outperforms Apple and all the others. Same price IIRc.
