You can put e60 hubs on them and use the 72mm wheels

^In that case if I keep my car I'm going to find me a set of those 17" style 42's... those wheels are killer!

I'm definitely going to go test drive a few, I was just wondering if the E39 chasis has an Achilles heel, or just general feedback, so for that I thank you
I'm getting an E39 for the exact same reasons as you. I test drove a 2001 530i/5spd/M-sport that my friend was going to buy about a year ago and it felt just a sporty as my 323i/sport, save for being faster. The previous owner kept egging me on the whole time, from the back seat going "yeah, you can easily go 75+ around this corner, and that one up there you can do about 55 before the back end steps out" He was a lawyer in his 50's, maybe 60's and had just bought a 535i M-Sport 6MT - he just wanted to get rid of it since he didn't have room for two.
The 530i is essentially the same car as an E46 330i when it comes to engine/drivetrain/etc. Same goes with the Z4 3.0i.

Now my friend wants a truck again, so he's planning on selling me that car as soon as he finds what he wants. He offered me his with an impeccable interior and exterior for $5500, and I've seen the maintenance records going back to 3k miles - dude spared no expense.
I've already got wheels and snow tires for it and a machine shop quoted me ~$75 to bore them out to 74.11mm

I will miss the zero oil burning of the M52TU though. My Z4 eats about a quart every oil change (7500-8000mi)

The style 42's are awesome. Almost as awesome as M-Pars, but without the 18" tire cost.

I say go for it! You won't regret it!

^That's what all the E39 guys keep telling me. There's a 530i sport with AT really close to me, I think I'm going to go test drive it just to get a feel for the chasis, if I love it then the search will be on for one with MT

Be prepared to meet defeat many times if you want a good deal on a 530/5spd. At the right price, they sell really fast. I called one listing on craigslist a couple months ago and the guy said it sold in under a day, for his asking price.

Yea, figuring that out now... one of them sold already, the other won't respond, probably sold too

I wonder if ZHP's sell this quick? I bought mine a day after it was posted

Oh well, if I can't find one then it's not worth the hassle right now, I enjoy the hell out of my ZHP, so it's not like I'm in a hurry

Good attitude to have. Take your time, snatch up the one that's perfect for you.

no rush bro. ZHP is good car, faster than the e39.
You have the better car. Why look forward for a downgrade?

If i were you and need some cash, i'll just grab a cheap ass 323i or 528i.

Some of you are so ignorant and think that e46 is the only "good" car in the world...lol. Anyway, my sister just bought a 2003 manual e39 and I have been driving it over the past couple days since she is out of town, I LOVE it. It's so smooth, and wayyy quieter inside the cabin than my zhp. Surprisingly, I really enjoy driving it and highly recommend it. Plus it's so easy to work on because there's so much room under the hood.

^That's what I've heard from most E39 owners, I'm still having trouble finding manual sport pack 530's near me, I'll have to go test drive an auto to see how I like them before broadening my search area.

(Please pardon my auto-correct)

own an e46 and have driven a an e39 528i for a few hours. I have to say the e39 feels more forgiving. Just try driving both over cobblestone streets, and the difference will be quite clear.

Looking for opinions... considering an E39

I own a 2001 530i. The person I bought it from had done the entire conversion to a m5. It looks fabulous, this car is reliable and a great ride. E39 are good vehicles if you go V6
