330Ci Whine / Howl Noise When Turning Under Acceleration

Hello to everyone.

Recently bought a 330ci auto with 80k miles.
I swapped from diesel so now my 3 litre engine sound quite different

When Im driving my car at any speed with low rev all is good.
No noises or nothing.
But if I press a pedal a bit harder and start accelerating and than turn my wheels slightly I can hear a whine howl noise coming from engine area.
For example driving over a big round about and than hitting accelerator a bit harder and I can hear it instantly. When wheels go straight it disappears instantly or if I let go my foot its gone.
There is no whine going straight at any revs.
There is no whine taking corners slowly with low revs.
I checked my PS fluid level and than flushed my PS fluid for brand new and still same.

Anyone any ideas?
Is that normal to hear in 330ci ?

I used to own a 325ci auto in 2009 and remember hearing the same. I even asked a question than in 2009 on bimmerfest forum but get no answer and sold a car shortly after anyway.

Here is my original question which bothers me again after 3 years)

http://www.bimmerfes...ad.php?t=372139

Thanks for any help

Thanks for reply

It is defo a mechanical whine not a tire whine.
Tires can squeal but only on low speed. I can hear it going over round about at 40mph.

I heard the same in my 325ci auto 3 years ago. Very weird.
No one else hear it??

Any ideas. Can that be an alternator bearing noise?
If so why only when turn under acceleration?
I just replaced my pulleys , tensioner and belts to make sure it is not a pulley bearing.
No luck.
Unfortunately we can not replace alternator bearing. It comes as one part.

I can also hear a very quiet whistle on idle that goes up with revs and disappear after 1500rev but red some comments that it is normal and produced by air going through air pipe and throttle flap.

Yeah , maybe they can but that depends on tire make and road quality I guess.
My tires now are completely diferent than in my 325ci in 2009 but sound is the same.

I had a similar noise on my 328Ci and it turned out to be my front bushes and lower left control arm.
I'm not all up on the mechanical talk but it sounds similar to what I had. The noise started out at only higher speeds, then started happening when I was standing still for parking...

Have you checked your power steering fluid level? The pump can make noises if your fluid is low and/or it is about to go out.

As I said in my first post I checked a level which was ok but decided to change a fluid anyway.
So it is Brand New fluid in it and level is correct.
I know that when pump is going it will make a noise when stationary
Mine is not making any sound at all even if I turn it to full lock left or right. No noise at all from pump.
Just this whine under acceleration coming from engine/dash area.

Cheers

If it is under load, then maybe wheel bearings? Does it sound the same no matter which direction you turn?

Yes it sound same and coming from same place no matter where I turn.
To be honest it sound like a bad bearing in power steering or alternator pulley but only on turn.
It sound like mid whine/whistle sound.

I wont here it no matter what rev if they are steady.
I only hear it when I accelerate and rev changing.
Sound is constant and is not changing with rev.
Clue?

I would have to record it tomorrow and post it you tube.
Maybe someone will tell me than.
Dont You guys here anything when taking a round about a bit more aggressively?
I just think if it is such uncommon and noone else here it how come I got it in two different coupes, one with 2.5 engine and 60k miles and current with 3.0 engine an 85k miles on a clock.
Weird

If I have to venture a guess, it would be your wheel bearings. Exact same symptoms on my old Mitsubishi. If that IS the case, change them all. Since they fail very close to each other unless you have some contamination in one of them.

It is defo not a bearing.
I replaced a bearing before and it sound different.

Also if it would be a bearing I would hear it on every turn I take fast and put pressure on front wheels, not only when I am acctually accelerating.
And it would change a pitch one side to another.

Well yesterday I realised that it is not about accelerating really but about certain rev.
My Humming/Whine noise is there only at 2400 rpm.
If I go higher or lower its gone.
It is more promminent with wheels turned.

I managed to reproduce it while stationary.
Could anyone of You try it for me and let me know what do you hear?

On a parking rev your car to 2400 and than turn your wheels any direction.
Can You hear anything?

I will post a video today so You can hear it.

Thanks

I am starting to think your power steering pump is failing. If so, there are two models (both fit). Easy to replace (if you have 13mm socket and 10mm socket - and can remove the belt) Be careful removing the pulley - it is a special plastic and will easily crack if given a sideways force.

A whining power steering pump is usually indicative of internal wear, especially if it has been leaking. Once the pump has been run with its fluid level too low, wear is rapidly accelerated due to the lack of lubrication. Replace your old pump with a new or freshly rebuilt unit in order to maintain smooth and quiet steering. Core charges apply to all rebuilt units.

LF-20 model power steering pumps are slightly more prone to failure than LF-30 power steering pumps. For this reason, BMW has released a Service Bulletin that addresses the retrofitment procedure of an LF-30 pump in place of the original LF-20.

NOTE: Those interested in replacing an LF-20 power steering pump with an LF-30 model must order Pressure Hose #32-41-6-764-725, O-ring #64-50-1-468-463, and the appropriate LF-30 pump.
**If your car originally had a 32-41-6-760-036 (LF-20), you can replace it with 32-41-1-094-965 (LF-30).
**If your car originally had a 32-41-6-760-034 (LF-20), you can replace it with 32-41-6-756-582 (LF-30).

IMPORTANT NOTE: LuK will only honor power steering pump warranties provided the power steering fluid reservoir was replaced in conjunction with the pump. These reservoirs are designed with unserviceable filters that may cause premature pump failure due to reduced or restricted flow. For this reason, we recommend that the fluid reservoirs are always replaced in conjunction with ANY power steering pump service.

If it is a steering pump why is it making a noise only at 2400?
No noise below or after. No noise at full turn?

that video is a severe example - I think yours is on the way to that failure

i have to guess (and this is a guess) that this rpm accentuates the problem
