Am I getting hosed by the dealership? Expansion Tank and Thermostat install

If you have an automatic, that fan is a b!tch. Maybe they're accounting for that. If you have an auto, make sure you have the right tools to take it off.

Fvck BMW dealerships. Seriously. They're garbage rip offs.

Btw, why are you replacing the expansion tank? Their recommendation? Or is it actually leaking?

Um and yes, that's expensive. The Radiator cap is the $10 ET cap that doesn't come with a new tank...bastards!

It's a fair price for a dealer...sort of. Even the $600 that's not unreasonable for a dealer is unreasonable...if...and only if...

You don't mind studying about 2-5 hours until you convulse. Read Mango's thread on overhaul...and read 4-5 other long cooling threads.

Personally, I think replacing therm is a good idea if not broken as they all seem to fail at some point...but when mine failed, it broke open, which is safer for the engine.

If ET is cracked, you have to replace that too.

Read a bit and you could do this. If automatic, you'll need to learn how to remove fan...shouldn't be a big deal after you know how.

What you guys don't understand is that he doesn't have a garage to perform this job at.

Where is he suppose to jack up the car to remove the ET or drain the coolant.

Plus its getting really cold out and its a pain laying on the rough ground to disconnect the hoses.

Is it really over? I had decided I was tired of coolant war threads, and threads about how as cars get old they sometimes break news flash threads, and thought I would wait for the insanity to stop, and we could get back to putting mtech bumpers on overheating cars.

OP could always take it to an ordinary mechanic with his own parts. Why are the dealership and diy his only options?

What you don't understand is you don't need to jack up the car to drain the ET. Ever done the job yourself or just trolling?

BTW, OP is not in Canada, he's in SC where the temperatures are still in the 80s.

Easy diy , no need for dealer.
