I need buying tips

I am going to look at a 2001 325i this weekend. I was wondering if there are any specifics I should look for on this model when looking at it this weekend. I was told that some e46 engines have oil leaks between the head and block due to the head gasket being bad.

Information about the car I am looking at:
2001 E46 325i
4-door
5-speed
102,xxx miles
White with Black Leather interior
$7,997

Also is there a way I can tell what engine is in it?

I also plan to build an engine to put in it and turbocharge it but that is for a later date.

Please let me know if you can help

Thanks in advance

Search the forums for common problems. The engine should be a 2.5L M54 unless the seller is lying or swapped it. If you're gonna turbo it, you might as well just buy an M3 with an S54.

Welcome to E46Fanatics, I hope you get the chance to see why we love these cars. Reply with a link to the ad if possible, so we can see what you're looking at

Here are a couple tips:

--A PPI (pre-purchase inspection) is very useful and usually pretty inexpensive. Speak with the seller/dealer and see if you can arrange a time to have your local BMW shop take a look-see.
--Service Records are very important in as much as they help you figure out what's been done. BMW will only have in their records what has been done at a BMW dealership.
--The cooling system is effective but it does wear out around this mileage. It costs about $300 to do it yourself with proper parts - but will cost a fortune if it blows and warps your motor.
--A turbo could be a fun addition, but take care of the maintenance first. These are fantastic cars, but they need to be taken care of. Invest in this order. Car -> Maintenance ->Mods. (Turbos and Headers are great, but not if your car falls apart).

Check out this thread for standard maintenance requirements and procedures: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=923563

Best of luck!

forced induction on these cars can get REAL expensive REAL fast. dont even plan on it, get a 330 and get some bolt ons and software and youll have yourself a fairly quick car. Or look at an M3 which is near perfect right out of the box. Just trying to save you some future headache and disappointment.
