2012 Mass Ballot question about vehicle diagnostics

Check it!

http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.ph...stion_1_(2012)

I wonder what this really means, like will we be able to get the GT1 super duper coding tool information with superior diagnostics at a reasonable price, or will this just mean that independent shops now can access it for a "fair price" whatever that means.

Either way, this sounds like it will benefit the BMW community, unless you're into buying brand new BMWs and they do start to add this type of thing into the original purchase price which inflates it.

Oh yeah, vote Yes on medical marijuana too, cause that's on the ballot as well

I don't think it's a good thing... all its gonna do is give these low end shops access to information they shouldn't have, maybeyou have to at least take a class like the certified tech do that operate the GT1 to learn the program, its like giving a license out to everyone regardless if they can drive. Now everyone will be able to code modules and key. If it passed start locking up the nice cars because there gonna get stolen.

For someone that works on both of my E46's constantly, I find this intriguing, and wonder the cost of getting such information as it could be of use, sometimes....

Question 1 doesn't matter anymore. They've already passed the law, but it's too late to take it off the ballots. So yay! The little guys won!

no, but it does hurt high quality shops like BPG that pay a lot of money for their BMW access software / tools etc...

Hurt them? what, hurts them historically because they've made lots of money by shelling out the cake for the BMW access and software? And because now they will not have to pay as much and will still make cake, even more cake probably?

Come on now SNA77...

Not to mention, I doubt they had every single available tool that the dealer's have at their disposal..

Part of the draw to shops like BPG is that they have dealer tools. Besides their techs, that's a differentiating feature between them and the gas station down the street.

BPG has at their disposal:

- Autologic
- GT1
- ISTA
- Access to all the tech docs via subscription service to BMW Tech info. Those tools cost the shop thousands of dollars per year.

So yeah, they're the closest thing to the dealer there is...
