Is this battery / alternator or something else?

(electronically stock car except 1000w monoblock + 12" sub)

A few months ago my cars electronics started playing up. When approaching a traffic light, if I braked slightly harder than normal my headlights and in car lights would dim, my stereo would momentarily power off etc.

This happened on and off for a few weeks at the most then went away for a labout 4-5 months.

On Saturday while pumping my sound system my dash lights lit up (DSC, , handbrake light, the lot) all lit up while driving. I turned the sound system and air-con and all electronic peripherals off and kept driving. I stopped the car at the carpark, and tried to turn on again and nothing - car didn't start, no lights, no dash, nothing at all.

I got out, had a cigarette wondering what the hell I'm going to do next. I finished my cigarette, got in, and tried to start the car and it powered right up. Strange.

Anyway yesterday I got home, parked in the garage turned the car off and tried powering up again. Same thing. I tried again in a few hours and nothing again.

I guess something needs replacing.

Is it my battery, alternator or something else? I have little ICE knowledge as you can see...

Alternator

Get your alternator replaced soon or you"ll be replacing your battery as well.
Easier to replace now while it's still warm out.

What do you mean still warm out? Do you mean worn out? Or are you referring to the weather in your part of the world? I'm in Australia!

As far as I'm aware this battery is the original from 2000 (I am the second owner). Definitely not the battery then?

Definitely get the battery checked first!

From my read of your post, you were not seeing the red light indicating a lack of charge.

No big surprise if a 12 year old battery is bad.

Your battery connections are loose!
And your battery is probably not secured, so its sliding around when you brake, the battery moves and the connection becomes intermittent.

Just a hunch.

^This happened to me. Car would not start. No click, no lights, nothing. Secured the battery down and tightened the connections and it's been fine ever since.

Yup no red light or battery light came on at all.

I thought about this since i seem to lose electronic power when braking a bit harder, but because of the big sub + enclosure I havn't had a chance to look at it yet (also scared messing around with electronics). I will look at this for sure when i'm home today since you have mentioned.

Did you have to clean the connections or anything? Is there an electrical cleaning/battery cleaning product I should use?

Did you have to charge the battery up again before it got going?

I have never had corrosion problems with any of my e46s batteries....but if so...steel wool, or a wire brush/terminal pole cleaner should suffice.

Hopefully its just a connection.

You should know that you can take voltage readings and many other tests from the cluster as well, which if not now, at some point will be useful to you.

Search "cluster test, or hidden OBC menus"

Good luck.

Nope the battery didn't die. I had been messing around in the trunk and when I disconnected and re-connected the battery I didn't tighten the connections enough and the battery didn't have a good enough connection to let the car start. Once I tightened it up the car was fine.

So you haven't checked the battery connections or had the battery checked?

Is the car now starting?

What exactly have you done?

If you don't know how to check/clean the battery connections, it's probably time to get somebody else to look at your car.

Ok so finally got some time to look at this tonight.

Fixed!

I took out the battery, had a look around, connected the positive, connected the negative, voila!

I did the cluster test for voltage with car off, and with the car on and under load (a/c, stereo) --> everything is fine. The battery is smaller than the original battery so it must have moved around a bit.

Question - the vent hose was not connected - where can I get a connecting piece for the hose? At the moment the battery just has the vent hole but no way to really fit the hose in.

Is it a problem if I leave it this way?

Nice!

Glad it worked out. Thanks for the update.

Your car will not explode without the vent hose, I'm not saying forget about it, but if you did, you would be fine.
