Shooting from the hip, my guess is a worn out bearing on a tensioner pulley or idler pulley.

Could be a loose belt, or a bearing going. Try to isolate where the sound is coming from. Use a 3ft section of tubing like a stethoscope. Hold one end to your ear and carefully probe the running engine with the other end. Be mindful of moving parts and electric fans that may start suddenly.

Hey Rick, we might be completely off base... What if the OP had an infestation of crickets under the hood of his Bimmer?

So it was easier to join the forum and start a thread, than to open the hood and have a quick look to see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

Ok, this is very strange-I had a similar noise (like very loud crickets), you could hear it out of either side when the windows were down. Driving me crazy! It mostly happened at hiway speeds, but not while accelerating. Shifting into N didn't make any difference, nor did turning the steering wheel. Turns out I had a broken stud on one of the downpipes to the catback. I had to drill out the remainder and use a bolt & nut. Problem solved.

Had same thing you need to change the whole tensioner I'm 99% sure that is it take a hose or pipe and put it on your ear and pinpoint it

The sound is coming from the back of the intake. The car has 130k miles is there anything else I should look in to fixing?

Cracked intake boots, vaccum lines.

So I figured out what the noise was.. and no it wasn't a cricket infestation...lol that's a good one tho. It's called a disa adjustment unit its on the intake manifold and its right above the throttle body. Thx for all the advice

I put on a brand new Maserati belt on like two weeks ago...every time the car sits and cools below freezing...it squeaks for a few mins on startup. Cold belt ~ stiff rubber... = squeaks

I rebuilt my DISA with a kit from German Auto Solutions. Better components than OEM. It will outlast a brand new unit. Easy to do.

I had this chirping noise when I bought the car. It came on with the AC. I noticed this mostly started happening in the cold.
I think replacing the pulley and belt solved the issue IIRC.

well thanks but I live in Florida so I'm not going to have an issue with a cold belt and its most definitely the disa unit it's coming from the top of the engine not the front of the car
