My vote is for belt or idler for your AC compressor, also possibly a bearing on the compressor.

My vote is for the blower motor going out / bearings squeaking.

Here is why... A change in AC Blower speed changes the chirp which means the 'blower motor'. If it was the belts or AC Clutch then the force of the air blowing into the cabin wouldn't change the pitch of the chirp cause the belts & clutches spin at RPM speed not blower motor speed.

There is a great DIY on blower motor replacement! Good Luck!

How come if I turn up the fan and keep the a/c off, the noise goes away. It is only occurring when the a/c is on -). Also when I turn on the a/c there is a growling noise. Is it the compressor?

There is an ECU fan right above the footrest; it's making a chirping sound to indicate that the useful life of the fan is coming to an end. To verify, get down in driver footwell, after you adjust the seat fully back; pull the carpeting back for better viewing just to make sure and listen for the little birdie (chirping sound). This is a well documented issue with the M3 also, so don't feel singled out. See the attached post.

If you're lucky, dmax will have his hose with him and help you isolate the source of your chirping...he'd probably check AC compressor first if I know him. He's not that funny...so you're better with his hose, if you know what I mean?
