I can't believe people are bitching about shelters not having a lot of food and being very handicap accessible. I'd rather go hungry for a little bit then have my house fall on me or drown. And I'd hope non handicap people would help the handicap people get around, but maybe I'm just expecting too much.

So what's the code of conduct for long power outages when you have a generator?
You're the only one on the block who has one. It's 30-40 degrees for a week straight. What do you say to your neighbors who knock on your door asking to sleep there? What if the whole block does it do you just let 20 people bunk in your living room? I would really hate to say no but it would be difficult to control your resources when that many people have access to them. A food and water supply for two goes away in a day between twenty people.

When our town was without power for a week you really got to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. Many were helping eachother with supplies. Ex: I saw one family in my neighborhood put a cooler in their front yard full of bottled water and a sign that said "FREE WATER". I had many offers from friends to come stay with them since they had a generator. One of the crappy things I remember seeing was that a couple hotels in town (that had power) jacked their rates up as much as 3x normal price. I felt this was taking advantage of the people especially the handicapped and elderly who NEEDED a/c in the middle of july. There were fist fights at gas stations as well.

I urge everyone to really think about this. It's a storm, power will be out for a couple days and there will be damage... All in all... a minor event. LOOK at how people are acting. LOOK how empty the stores, gas stations, resources are. LOOK how CRAZY people get. Now imagine there was an event that knocked us out for weeks or months. How would people act then in their most desperate hour? Just think about that.... hope it makes a couple people start collecting canned goods, water, medical supplies, weapons, generator, tools, etc. You add a couple items every month and in a year, you'll be better prepared than 90% of the country.

Stuck down in NJ at my parents, on the mainland right off Ocean City, basically right where the eye is headed, should be a fun next couple of days, especially since if we lose power we lose water too. We have plenty of supplies but this could turn out to be a pretty bad time.
