All windows up/down botton broken?

Hi all, 1st post. I am looking to pick up a used convert and the car seems to be in good working order. The thing I noticed is if I hit the middle left button to lower windows it doesn't work. the actual button seems broken, like alot of play when I push it. I have a feeling if it were to make contact it would actually work since all the windows are opening and closing properly. Has anyone had any experience with this, perhaps just the mechanical button part itself is broken?

Should I look for any other known issues with the convertible?

Thanks in advance, I am a noob....I did search too

Welcome. Not really any different from other E46s. Glove box lock can be temperamental, so check that. You can inspect the top bat wings/lines (look for that thread), but that doesn't mean the top is bad, just a potential area to fix as they wear out. Not a biggie. If it's old, check for leaks, the drain plugs can get clogged, but again, not a big deal to unclog. EDIT: Oh, and get a wind screen if it doesn't come with one. GL!

Same thing happened to me after about 9 years. You're right, most likely the master switch is broken. You have to replace all three on the left side - they come as a unit. $30-$50 as I recall, bought online. It's an easy fix.

Here are a few quick shots! It needs a bath and some minor fixes here and there, but I drove it tonight and it seems solid for an 11 year old car!

Congratulations, looks like a beauty! Just google e46 master window control module or words to that effect. You should end up on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/e46-window-switch.

+10 on the previous comment about the windscreen. It is by far the single greatest improvement you can make to your convertible. You can kind of make out what it is in my little signature pic. Also, suggest some leather treatment for the drivers seat at least. And check the tightness of the screws on your glovebox lock. Yours doesn't auto-lock, which is a blessing in my view, but if the screws come loose and you can't unlock it, that would be a bitch.

And lastly - but certainly not least - look at the top of the vert and general forums. You'll find all you need to know about preventative maintenance. Mostly you'll need to focus on the fuel pump and cooling system, the two things that can leave you stranded. There's a fellow named Mango who's the resident expert on this.

Good luck!

With all due respect to Ceaze176's offer, I would recommend against buying a used electrical switch - especially when you can get a brand new one for about the same price.

Take that thing off your grill, it's bothering my aesthetic tastes and affecting your cooling efficiency (not really!).

Read fanatics for a while...there will be a lot of things you want to do. Mango handles cooling alright in his sticky, but never depend on only one thread...read diys until you puke...then you'll be ready. Trust no one until you know to trust them...read some of their OT posts and you'll see if they have severe psychological problems...always good to know before taking their advice!

Anyway, fluids need changing, belts, pulleys, and as you'll see, a number of other things that will become issues like ccv, ofhg, vcg...not too bad...and there are instructions here for everything.

Sorry CJFTP, but even using Google Danmark, everything I found, at least on the first page, keeps coming back to the US. Maybe some on ebay will ship back to you for a fee, as I'm guessing that would still be cheaper than buying it locally.
