My Ride: 2001 330 ci, 1988 M6
Before I buy a new MAF sensor, am I missing anything?

My 330ci has a terribly rough idle and sometimes it runs totally ragged right up through the rpm range.

When I unplugged the MAF sensor it idled perfect. I didn't drive it that way though. I probable should.
Cleaning the MAF sensor made no difference.

So. Is that it? Do I just need a new MAF and that's it? Any other ideas? Should I get the codes?

Before you spend a chunk of money, do you have any friends or acquaintances who have a similar car so perhaps you can swap the part as a trial and error mehtod of car repair? On a related car, the M3, it is well documented in forums that indeed the informal test on a MAF is to unplug the connector to see if the car will run smoother. In the regional forum, perhaps you can reach out there and see if can get a helping hand.
