i have one, use it for veggies if I don't feel like going the sauteed route. I also use it to reheat precooked items that I don't want to do in the microwave.
I wouldn't use it for uncooked protein, will probably get a sous vide machine for those instances.

I do use it for bivalves when they're in the shell, so I was wrong on the uncooked protein thing. I don't cook mammal/avian protein or fish in the steamer.
I prefer to saute shrimp/lobster/de-shelled scallops...
