Revers Light Out

Alright guys, I just recently learned that my reverse lights are out. I'm pretty sure its not the bulb since reverse light bulbs rarely ever go out. I will double check it just in case but I was browsing around the forums and I heard this is a common problem due to bad wires or the switch going out.

I drive a 2000 323i sedan M/T, I was wondering if somebody can help me troubleshoot this, I have little knowledge of wiring and electronics so I'm going to need explainations dumbed down.

Another question, if I were to take it to a shop to get this repaired, how much and how long would you think this would take to get it repaired? Broke college student working two jobs, I don't have too much money and time on my hands...

Understand about the money and time but you're going to need to do something if you want to fix this. Buy a multimeter and learn how to use it. Take apart your inner trunk panel. You will then be able to test the wiring, bulbs and sockets.

I do know that (at least on my car) the two reverse lights each have their own positive wire going to them, so it was possible for only one to go bad. Turned out it was a broken wire in the rubber harness that holds all the wires going from trunklid to car body.

Your problem could be:
- Bulbs burnt out
- Wiring harness broken
- Fuse no. 27 blown (in glovebox)
- Reverse-lamp switch, which is in the transmission

I plan on buying one soon. It's on my to buy list. I just recently bought jacks and jack stands so I can do my own oil changes.

Does anybody know of an in depth guide or write up explaining reverse light troubleshooting? I can't seem to find Amy.

Well I tried.

But for $100 I'll fix your lights for you.
