Step to Manual Conversion

Askin this for a friend. Has anyone done an Auto or Steptronic to a Manual Transimission conversion? Any drawbacks? complications? a shop said it can be done for around 4Gs, straight conversion including computer and OEM BMW tranny. good deal?

Thanks

Isn't worth it...

why didn't he think about what tranny he wanted prior to buying the car?

My Ride: A BMW isn't a "Ride"
I converted my E36 325is from an automatic to a manual when I blew up the slushbox...

It was a nightmare- there are all sorts of little differences, and the car was never really right (untill we stripped it down into a track car).

The job will nickle and dime you to death on things like the reverse light switch, vehicle start interlock, instrument cluster, ZKE coding, DME, clutch line install, interior trim... Wait till you see the factory price on a differential.

In the end, it is going to be a bit of a basterdized car. Dealers will look up the VIN and tell you your car is an automatic and if you ever sell the thing, you have A LOT of explaining to do... This is why the E36 became a track car, it was virtually unsellable.

Your dealer quoted you US$4K for a bunch of headaches. You are far better off either selling the slushbox and getting a car with a 5 speed, or waiting till your right side up on your lease or financing.
