E46 330i Whistle noise on cold engine

So ive been doing some reading on the forums and im not the only one that has had this issue but id like to get another opinion to figure this out. Im getting the high pitch whistle until the engine is completly warm on cold mornings(i live in florida). The engine runs/idles great ,no CEL and ive done almost all the preventive maintence that i can think of. It is for sure Not the SAP,pulleys, belts,or intake boots. The sound is distinctively coming from the front/middle of the intake manifold. Ive replaced the oil seperator, cleaned and replaced seal on the disa valve and with me touching and pushing on everything i cant seem to alter the noise in anyway. It will do it at idle and random rpms as the noise gets higher and lower, coming and going until its fully warm then its completely gone. My only thoughts are either a faulty oil seperator, intake manifold gasket, iac rubber boot. But it really does sound like its coming from inside or on intake manifold somewhere.

You may also have a leaky DISA O-ring as well??

Get a piece of vacuum hose or a cheap mechanics stethoscope and pull of the transducer and use this to "listen" around the engine to see if you can isolate the noise. Put the vacuum hose up to your ear or put the stethoscope on and listen through the hoses.

I replaced the o-ring on the disa, cleaned it well and it seemed to be in good shape 3000 miles ago, just unbolted it again and it seems to be intact. The oil seperator i installed about 5000 miles ago was OEM ...although i did get it off ebay..it came with a plug for the vaccumm port. Not sure if it was the cold weather or not(old seperator was plugged aswell).Id hate to replace the seperator again but its aparent the sounds coming directly from the top/bottom of the intake manifold. Touching the lines to the seperator while its whistling does nothing at all. It will not whistle at ALL unless the ambient temp. Is below 50-60 F. Im gunna video the whistle next cold day but here in florida its freezin one day and scortchin the next. Thanks

My 330 did this untill the day that I sold it. I did all of the stuff that you did, plus replaced the DISA. The car passed a smoke test and ran great. I thought nothing of it. If you do find out what it was, I'd be curious to learn too.

Most 330's and probably all other similar 6 cylinders make a air rushing noise at idle, not a whistle, but it does sound like a big vacuum leak.

I believe this has to do with the intake design, materials and the ICV.

So before you wrap up too much time chasing a problem, make sure it is not a "normal" condition.

Again, my 330 had this vacuum leak noise, but no whistle and this is normal for at least the 330 as I have heard the same thing on many other 330 cars.

Thank you for the suggestion....I unplugged the SAP, same issue. Noise is not from that side. its from the driver's side. Totally sounds like a pully or something squeaking under there PLUS mad whistle when starting cold....My car has 168,000 miles and is a 2001 E46 ZHP 330i.
I have had a crazy whistle from my engine ever since I took it to the auto mechanic for an air leak I gave up on. My engine runs great. But gas mileage is very poor and I get a LOUD whistle until the engine is completely warm. It whistles at idle, when accelerating and maintaining speed. I just did this "Intake Boot" write-up DIY today. Used a factory boot. All went very smooth as I read this FANTASTIC write-up before proceeding. The whistle is still there. I see many references to possible pulley/tensioner being the source of the whistle. Are these parts expensive? I consider myself really good at DIY, but no master as I need to do research before I take on any task beyond brakes & oil. Would it make sense to just replace these parts, anyways? I plan to keep my car as long as possible... My goal is 1,000,000 miles. Any feedback is appreciated.

Tensioners and idlers are easy to replace. To check if they're bad, remove your belt and then spin the idler/tensioner wheel. If it spins freely, replace it.

I have the same noise. Its fairly random for me, but seems to happen most when car is cold. Once engine is warm, it might happen randomly for a second then back to normal. It sounds like a belt, but all the belts are tight and were replaced 15k miles ago, so not sure what it is.

Idler and tensioners. Replace 'em.

Whistling noise

Ive read on this forum that an aftermarket alternator can also be the culprit.

I totally am hearing the noise from there! And I DID put in an aftermarket alternator! Holy Crap! I am going to check it in the AM and listen closer to that area...I really did not enjoy that job I may be doing my alternator again....I totally tried to go cheap and get a rebuilt alternator....I am so sorry to my fellow fanatics, I deserve what I am getting for trying to go cheap....I think I saw a quote on here once that went something like "If you can't afford to maintain a BMW, then don't own one..." ....now I understand what that jerk meant...

Thanks in advance for ANY feedback...
