Oval Rear View Mirror Problems....

....ive read quite a few threads about oval mirrors dripping acid all over consoles, and im hoping mine hasn't come to that

i pulled into my carpark and noticed there was a small section on the very left edge that wasn't dimming

so for those who have had the dripping acid problem, is this the start of things to come?

id hate to have to replace my black timber and/or console because of the acid damage

Mine very recently suddenly decided to grow dark blurry patches and then do so all over. I haven't noticed anything dripping from it and certainly hope it doesn't start. I can still see out of it but the view is slightly blurred and dark.

I gather they aren't cheap to replace based on my initial scouting online. Is this something one can buy from a wrecker?

yeh over 1K from Doncaster BMW

problem with buying from wrecker is it could go bad again very quickly

im thinking of removing it just in case, but cant work out to get it off

edit* did some online browsing...... infared mirror is USD $465 from getbmwparts.com (part no. 51167892263)

if you want to order 2 and split the shipping shoot me a pm

only problem is, the alarm will need to be re-coded, so might have to visit the dealer anyway - fk! i'm trying to avoid them at all costs

Your mirror is not the infrared one, you need the radio one (refers to the remote control frequency).

For the time being I am probably going to put up with it. The more I look into this, the more the wallet looks like flaming up badly.

Interestingly when I searched for that part number in Google I turned up a match $30 cheaper even though it's from the same place! Odd.

Any idea what the shipping cost was going to be if you bought just one?

about 60-80 bucks in my experience for something that big/weight

yeh i know what u mean about the wallet flaming up, i just spent 800 bucks on high flow cats and dont need this expense

i might see how it goes over the next few days, and just leave a Micropak Ultra-Plush towel on my console over night just in case

it seems to be the sun that causes the mirror to pack up

haha... you're getting off light. I've endured an Inspection II, new pads, rotors and sensors all round, LED tail lights, new themostat and coolant and then new rear trailing arm bushes and an exhaust bracket. Cop all that in the space of 6 weeks and see how you feel. I need a breather.

I was actually thinking it was more like cold rather than heat which caused the mirror problem. It seemed to happen very shortly after a recent visit to the ski slopes, not that the car hasn't been there before.

I got my faulty rear-view mirror replaced with a new one for free from the company that manufactured them. Sent me a new one and I sent my faulty one back to them with pre-paid shipping. Didn't pay a cent!

The man is correct all mirrors with automatic dimming are manufactured by 1 company and they offer life time warranty.
