@ajesse,
It's very likely your battery. The E46s are very sensitive to weak batteries.
Furthermore, if the battery is original or more than 3-5 years old then it's Definitely time to have it replaced.

@bimmergarage thanks for the advise. im not too sure if it is the original. would that cause the car to suddenly shut off randomly and not want to start? ive never had any problems before

If the car is already running, it should continue running with a dead battery, though maybe BMWs really hate dead cells. Usually a dead cell can run if you jump it, but it will cause weird electrical phenomina. Though, like I said, maybe BMWs just don't let themselves run with a dead cell. I'd replace the battery if it's old anyway. If the battery is new and gives you strong voltage readings when you test it, then you need a new alternator. Battery cells die very suddenly though, so if I were you, I'd hope for a dead battery.

I know it may seem odd that "weak/old" battery could do this (or have this effect to our E46 BMWs) but it does. The cluster lights comes on like normal but it just doesn't crank... (or you may get weird light effects on the cluster, etc.)

BMWs are special...

If you want to confirm > just go to autozone and ask for a brand new 49-DL battery*, drop it in your vehicle. I bet you two cases of beer that it'll crank right up like normal.

*or something with a minimum of 750CCA

That could very likely be the age of the car.. ie: combination of an OLD alternator and battery. If you had your A/C, radio, headlights AND along with all the other onboard electronics) ALL running - the load on the OLD alternator just couldn't keep up & still charge a horridly old battery.

Yup, sounds to me like his alternator is dead.

i believe its the alternator. when it first died driving home you could start it again right? if so its probably the alternator. just go to o'reilys or somewhere and get your battery test just in case

It's still good to their little voltage meter.. Not for your M3.
Use the hidden OBC codes to see actual voltage. However, since you can't get the engine to start it won't help in this instance. (note: you should get 14.1 volts during idle)

The quickest solution is to drop a fresh battery in and see if it cranks, otherwise you'll be wasting time (and perhaps $$$ for a mechanic to) disassembling your alternator for nothing. At least this way you can eliminate the battery to be the cause.

They don't have the worlds best diagnostic equipment. I've had some bad calls from those guys saying my battery or alternator is good when it was actually bad. The good news is that there isn't anything special about the BMW battery or alternator that I'm aware of so any reputable shop should be mable to take a look at it for you.
