Faulty Gauges......

Ever since i got my car about a year and a half ago the temp gauge has been faulty.... sometimes it works.... sometimes when it turn the car on it goes all the way hot and all the way cold. Just randomly. Its not a temp gauge issue, im fairly sure its the cluster. More recently my "MPG" indicator has been going nuts.... its stuck between the 30 mpg and 50 mpg reading and it just keeps going back and forth while driving..... it drives me nuts. I know i needed to eventually address this... i checked these forums and im still not quite clear on my options.

I don't want to spend 800 on a new cluster.... everything else on it works fine... is there anything else i can do?

1. Can i buy a used cluster.... but them im told i will have a tampering dot on my car and i don't want to hurt the resale value?

2. Is there a way to maybe repair the gauges manually, or even just disable the mpg one.

My cars a 99 328. I'm greatful for any help anyone can provide.
