Getting braces at an older age. Share your experiences

Growing up i was taken to the dentist once before i turned 18. It has been obvious i need dental work since about 4th or 5th grade, but parents couldn't afford it. My teeth are pretty bad and are cause for a great insecurity of mine. I've had offerS to do commercials but turned them down because i don't want to see a video of me talking and showing my teeth. I feel as though it would have been embarrassing.

The last year I've spent shopping around and learning what i can about what i should do and have finally found a place to fix my teeth reasonably and do a quality job. My 21st birthday is a couple of weeks away and I'm getting braces to start off the process sometime in January. Although I'm extremely excited to have a smile I'm confident with, I'm apprehensive about the next 1 1/2 years with braces in the prime of my years. Going to bars and being looked down upon or made fun of for having braces at this age is a worry of mine.

I'm just curious if anyone else on here has gone through something similar and can share their experience with me. Also any input on the situation would be interesting.

Best regards,
James

They might be able to use those invisalign braces on you which you won't even see. Back when I had braces at around 13, they said those only work in adult mouths. Could be a good option

I have a buddy with those that said they really don't work that well so i doubt they would be good for how much help my teeth need.

Ex-wife got 'em when she was 29. Her teeth weren't bad at all - mostly her lowers that were slightly crooked. Took a year and a half and 6 grand iirc.

Look on the brightside, you can at least wear those neat rubber bands around them, and you can get them in different colors too. Get them to match your shoes and everything.

Can I just say what a reduction to seek out somebody who actually knows what they're speaking about on the internet. You undoubtedly know the right way to bring an issue to light and make it important. Extra individuals have to read this and perceive this aspect of the story. I cant consider you're not more in style because you definitely have the gift.

I'm saying this cause my mom is an orthodontist, people do this all the time. My mom is about to get another set put on herself for the third time (she doesn't like retainers). I have plenty of friends that have them as well but most wear the clear ones. My personal opinion I would go with the clear ones or they have these new ones that go on the back of your teeth. I'll have to ask my mom in the morning what they are called if you are interested.

I had 12 spacers, they suck. Other than that, you get used to them pretty quickly. Had mine for a year and a half.

i'm pretty sure they are called "incognito braces" or something along those lines. basically it's just the wires and stuff are now in the back of the teeth instead of in the front.

I had mine after college. Glad I did it. Not a problem with the gals I dated.
